Chief White Crane Recreation Area is near the Missouri River
and Gavins Point Dam and is a great place to take advantage of a wide variety
of recreation opportunities. The area is popular for fishing, kayaking, and
canoeing on Lake Yankton and the Missouri River. The park was named after Chief
White Crane who met with Lewis and Clark in this area in 1804. Campers may choose
from 146 50-amp electric campsites, 2 tent campsites or 10 one-room log-style
cabins. Cabins have accommodation for four people, including air
conditioning/heat and electricity. Park amenities include picnic shelter,
playground, hiking and biking trails, and a fishing dock with easy access to
Lake Yankton. Many eagles spend their winters below Gavins Point Dam along the Missouri River where they can catch fish and prey on waterfowl in the open water. The campground is closed during the winter months when the
majestic bald eagle is known to roost in the large cottonwood trees throughout
the park.
