Fantastic park management
Park management is fantastic! Had an issue with an electric hookup that the park staff fixed super quickly, and everyone was a pleasure to deal with (especially John). I happened to encounter a fallen tree on the disc golf course that was also cleaned up right away. They're on top of their game here!

HORRIBLE EMPLOYEES
I was approached by the camp host after I was walking out of the shower and she defecated in the toilet in restroom. She asked for more money, which I replied I would pay directly on government website. She told me she was going to tell John on me. John was standing so close to me when he interrupted me and asked if I had cash to pay him for state fees and was very aggressive. John started following around the park while I was walking to restroom in mornings and then when I called the park to complain he trespassed me for having no permit (I have an annual permit). He is a total pervert. I have still had no follow-up or any information from the park on the unprofessionalism of the staff at this park. We have went on to stay at multiple parks and private campgrounds in SD and no issues. These two are a waste of taxpayers money and I pray they receive treatment or help for their issues.

Very Nice Park
We visit Big Sioux often. It is the quietest and least expensive campground in the Sioux Falls area. The staff is great...always very friendly. The facilities are clean. But! There are locals walking around the campground often with their dogs off leash. And there are other campers, especially on the weekends, that walk right through your campsite to save a dozen steps by staying on the pathways. It is difficult to not say anything.

Expensive Ouch!
First thing is, I think SD state parks should rethink charging nonresidents more than residents, and also not rethink charging an entrance fee on top of the camping fee. This is not very inviting…unless you want to make nonresidents unwelcome. Even the entry fee was $5 higher per day for nonresidents, plus the $10 extra reservation fee.We visited a lot of parks on this trip and this was by far the least desirable and the most expensive with all the fees. The sites were spacious and nicely kept up, but the surroundings were not deserving of the fee in my opinion. The first thing we noticed was the odor. It smelled like a cow pasture..maybe a farmers fertilizer? The restroom in our loop was a pit toilet..no way of knowing when reserving. The main restroom had a strong septic smell on the women’s entrance..except when it was covered up by campfire smoke in the evening. Then when I tried to cook breakfast on our camp stove the bees, flies and biting gnats(no seeums) made it unbearable. This continued until dark. We had to jump on our bikes and they still persisted. I could not wait to leave this place....worst camping experience of our 56 night trip. I only stayed here to avoid a day of rain south of here.

This is a beautiful campground,. Nice level pads and shade trees throughout.
The big negative was a creepy homeless guy who was sleeping in his minivan at the bathhouse. I never saw any security or law enforcement drive by. Definitely made me uncomfortable.

Review
We love camping in the SD State Parks, but the price has risen for the out of state campers and visitors. Is this so you lessen the MN campers or visitors? Are you trying to make more room for the SD residents and deter the other state visitors. This could affect the enjoyment of a lot of out of state people and families.

Big Sioux campground is beautiful with lots of trees and the sites are all flat and easy to get into even though they are all back in sites. The bathrooms were clean and were always in great shape. The camp host(ess) was very accomodating and explained everything quite well. The hiking trails along the river were well maintained and were being enjoyed by many people. Will definitely stay in the future when in the area.

Great campground; nontransparent pricing
The campground itself was lovely with big sites, shade, etc.
Pricing was not transparent: Online, it stated $30 for a campsite, but then an additional $10 online reservation fee was added. Furthermore, when I arrived, I was informed that I also had to pay $15 for park use. This turned a $30 campsite into a $55 campsite, which is far above my usual budget for a quick overnight stopover.

Nice campground
It was a very hot weekend and it had rained quite a bit washing mud onto the paved path. It was messy in several places. The shower house was clean and the shower water was hot. The campsite was spacious and pretty level. There was a lot of wear around the fire ring and since it had rained, it was muddy.

Nice campground but expensive for electric only site.
The campground is very nice and the camp sites are very level. However, for electric only camp site, it was very expensive for one night compared to other non-South Dakota state campgrounds. Between the nightly rate, reservation fees, non-resident fee, and non-resident vehicle pass, it cost us almost $60 for one night of camping.

Enjoyable Camping
We enjoyed our camping. There is plenty of walking space for our 2 dogs. The hosts were very helpful. Tom greeted us and provided information about the park and surrounding community. We like to goto antique shops and there are plenty to choose from locally.

The site we had was very private. Except when the person mowing and trimming decided to mow and trim our site while we were still there. Very rude.
At night, there were so many people driving thru the campground.

The disc golf course was a beautiful, pleasant surprise. The grounds were well kempt, other campers were quiet and respectful. Always a plus when it's barefoot friendly! And thank you for the last minute site change!

cabin was clean and air worked great. Have stayed here before. Only have two reccommendations. Better lights in pit toilets. If it is cloudy or evening, bring a light along, you can not see anything. Also, would like water outlets closer to cabin and campsites. This park only has 3 spots for water. Bathroom, and a hydrant by each pit toilet. Two of the cabins have a substantial walk for toilets or water. Otherwise love the park, trails and location to the city.

Great spot for a weekend trip
Our toddler loves camping so we chose this park close to home for a quick weekend trip. The site was well spaced, marked and level for tenting. The bathhouse was clean and well kept. The grassy areas were well maintained. In the future, a clear place or sign on how to buy firewood would help as we ended up driving into town to purchase approved firewood as we could not find a non-invasive way to reach the camphost and the booth at the entry was unmanned this weekend.
The only things I would like to see improvement on would be the park and river access. Our camping spot was adjacent to the park. During our stay we had numerous kids walking through our site because there is no path to the park except through a campsite. A designated, paved pathway (or 2) would largely alleviate this problem. The other note pertains to the river. With the river being right next to the bike path, we chose to go down to the river to fish. As there was no direct access down, we navigated the safest way from the bank. Designating a staircase and possibly a dock to fish from would be a huge point of improvement for this park.

Almost perfect
Gorgeous trees and large spaces that are mostly level. No water or sewer at the site which was disappointing for the price. Clean restrooms, only 2 shower stalls, but they're in excellent condition. 2 guys spent MANY hours power washing the restrooms. Well, one guy (redhead) did. The other employee sat on his phone. Nice trails to walk or bike. Only complaint about our stay was that a road work company came in and spent a few hours cutting into the road and filling the cuts with fresh asphalt. The noise was incredibly loud. A simple email letting campers know about the work would have been nice. We stayed in our site longer than we wanted as we were afraid to get fresh asphalt on our vehicle. Otherwise an excellent stay with friendly park workers and well mannered guests.

When we arrived we did get told that the lift station had issues and that the shower house\bathrooms are not going to work. I think we maybe could get a discount or maybe a free night when booking next time. Not a deal breaker but for people that tent camp it would be a bigger deal.

This is a lovely little hidden gem. Nice playground for the littles. RV sites pretty level and very tidy. Vault tpilets clean and have hand sanitizer. Camp hists cruise around on a regular basis. Nice bkie trails and a few hiking trails. If you have a pet, make sure they are protected from ticks as they ticks were active.

Great weekend away
Enjoyed our visit over the weekend in a cabin. The information packet provided was great! The kids enjoyed walking the paths, playing at the playground, playing by the water and getting a little muddy. The cabin was a pleasant surprise with two bunk beds and a large table to eat at inside there was also enough room to set up an extra cot so there was plenty of space for all 6 of us to sleep comfortably in the cabin. Was a little disappointed was not able to get firewood on site had to go into town to pick up at gas station, but very nice fire pit with swing away cooking grate. We were there for other activities and using the cabin as a slowly get back into camping gear preparing for every other weekend again.
