Great State Park
The Bathroom stations at Roy Lake state park were well taken care of as well as the grounds! we enjoyed the hiking trail on the island . we celebrated 50 years together with our children and grandkids, they thoroughly enjoyed the beach and used the kayaks and we rented a pontoon from the lodge . We will be back!!!

Great new Cabin
Cabin 1 is brand new. It still have the chemical smell from the flooring but after a bit of airing out it was gone. It has expanded from 3 beds to 4, they added a full table with wheelchair access. The deck is gone, replaced with a ground level patio for accessibility. Parking is a little closer as well which is nice for charging boat batteries.
The only negative is the sidewalk between the two cabins was removed. That was very nice to have.

Great Campgrounds
Camp host was very rude. Would not deliver firewood because she'd "have to get her keys." We send kids over with money and she told them to call us and make us pick up wood. Also, she was yelling at her party to move an ATV that was parked on grass. The ATV was not ours but she kept yelling at us to move it.

Review
Everything was above expectations except for 1 thing. When they had their mowing day they did not mow our whole lawn and with the rains the grass got VERY long with mosquitoes very very bad. It was hard to enjoy being outside. If they would have mowed the whole lawn it may have helped with mosquitoes. They could have moved the picnic table and mowed closer to our camper.

Roy lake
We love the tent only site! One of the best tent sites in the state. We wish more state parks had tent only sites available

Excellent State Park
We had an excellent experience at Roy Lake State Park! The grounds were absolutely immaculate and exceptionally well maintained. Everywhere we went, it was obvious that the staff takes great pride in keeping the park beautiful.
The public bathrooms were cleaned daily and were some of the nicest, cleanest campground restrooms we’ve used. The walking trails and park roads were also very well maintained and made it easy and enjoyable to explore the park.
The staff was outstanding. They were always smiling, friendly, and welcoming to everyone they met. They clearly run a tight ship, and it shows in every aspect of the park.
Roy Lake State Park is a wonderful place to camp, relax, and enjoy the outdoors. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a clean, well-managed, and enjoyable state park experience.

Nice stay
We stayed in Suite 16. We have an infant and a toddler. We chose this room based on its proximity to the parking lot, accessibility to get all of the items associated with kids into the room, and it wasn’t too close to the water. The room itself was great, very clean, nice updates, air conditioner worked perfectly. The main issue we had was, the lock on the door was broken and there is no deadbolt. Our toddler could easily open the door. Of the door is locked it can’t be opened from the outside. But if you’re inside and turn the handle it unlocks and opens the door. A deadbolt would solve this issue.

Nice campground, subpar service
The campground is very good and well kept. My big gripe on this trip is we rented a fishing boat for the day, which we were very much looking forward to. Once we go to get the boat, it only has one broken seat and no gas in that, so we had to cancel that. Then, we noticed the very next day they had brand new seats in the boat. Someone else got to enjoy the boat, but we didn't. All we got is refunded our money. Very poor planning by the campground to rent out a boat in that kind of shape

A little piece of heaven
Roy lake West campground is beautiful. Tons of trees and very nice spots for campers and tents. I feel like they are always making improvements such as adding cabinets and planting trees. The bathrooms are well kept and staff are very friendly.

Nice tent sites. Best campground near Sisseton.
Located in the picturesque Coteau Des Prairies, Roy Lake State Park consists of two small units nestled on the northeast and northwest shores of Roy Lake.
95% of the state park is campground. There are a few tent sites, many RV sites, cabins, and a lodge suite (not sure on quantity) above the campground store/commons area. The store has some Roy Lake State Park branded items and some random foods, drinks, and camping tools. I wouldn’t put stock in them having exactly what you need/want — it’s very small. The commons area has giant picture windows overlooking the lake, a TV, comfy furniture, board games, a rotating pizza cooker, and a few other random things. There is also an outside seating area that overlooks the lake.
I stayed in the east unit, which is smaller and slightly calmer than the west unit. Each side has boat ramps, beaches (smaller on the east side), cabins, and playground.
Monday through Thursday morning in June, it was very quiet, with very few other campers. It was amazing. On Thursday, people started rushing in like a flash flood. It filled up almost completely and things got a bit noisier, but it was still quiet during quiet hours. I left on Friday, so I can’t attest to weekend behavior.
The bathhouse was nice and pretty clean. Heated with free, untimed showers. Very nice, but a long walk from our site.
We stayed in tent site T6, which shares a space with T7. T7 has a nice lake access spot that we used (before campers came on Thursday) to put in our kayak, swim, and fish. T7 is a lot smaller than T6, but T6 doesn’t have its own beach access. For these sites you must park in the parking area, and walk to the site. For some extra steps, you are afforded some privacy and a more natury feel. The cattail-filled field in front of our site lit up with lightning bugs at dusk.
The campground has tons of mature native trees. There is a lot of lawn, but they don’t spray it with chemicals, which I appreciate. Be warned that this means this park (and others nearby, like Sica Hollow) will have thistles, so bring closed shoes for hikes. We saw turtles, snakes, squirrels, ground squirrels, deer, rabbits, pelicans, ducks, geese, seagulls, tons of other birds, fish, and more — just in this park.
Roy Lake was clear in June, though I didn’t get to paddle as much as I had planned due to wind. It’s a pretty decent size (3 sq miles) and just one of hundreds of lakes in the glacial lakes area. The whole coteau area was so beautiful. Definitely worth reading up on the geology of the area before coming.
There is a bit more hiking in the area than is listed on AllTrails. I’ll include a picture of the trail map for Roy Lake State Park, which you can find at the campground store (outside on the wall) and also in the SD GFP app. There is also some hiking at Sica Hollow SP, Pickerel Lake Rec Area, and Waubay National Wildlife Refuge (these trails are also not on AllTrails, a few miles and a pretty tall and scary observation tower).
Closest decent sized grocery store and other needs are in Sisseton, a half hour drive through very picturesque countryside.
We stayed at this park while my son was attending a day camp in Sisseton. I will pick this campground again if he chooses to attend the camp in the future.
