Cozy, but noisy

Campsite was clean, moderately level, and fit my tent well. The fire pit was of good size and the electrical post worked as intended. The overlook was nice. Park employees I spoke to were friendly and knowledgeable. My only complaint is trains. They were traveling adjacent to the park all day and all night causing me to sleep very poorly.

Fantastic Weekend Getaway

Loved the King campground, the facilities were obviously new and up-to-date. Would likely have preferred the other campground if we came in July. Great hiking and views.

Amazing Expansion

This was my first time to visit after the 2024 expansion and it is amazing. I stayed in an immaculate new cabin and loved the new bathhouse. The old part of the park still features the pink quartzite cliffs and flowing river. There are many hikes and all are easy and under 2 miles. The only negative was the train line close by that blew its horn at 6:00 a.m.

Quaint

Trash has got to be more of a priority. We found lots of trash at the campsite and in the trees. Very disappointing having a pocket filled with trash while looking for wood.

Wonderfully peaceful

Clean level RV site with electric only. Restrooms and showers were the cleanest and best we have ever experienced. Roads were in great shape and provided great bike riding.

Palisades was our heaven on earth

We camped on site 77 and were amazed with the privacy and facilities. We were across from two cabins. The shower house was located just a short walk down the hill, facilities were clean, modern - overall a perfect experience. The campground was located just few minutes from a small town with all the necessary amenities.

We have been coming here for 10+ years, used to love driving 3.5 hours to go here but not anymore. Teased by the wifi adaptation but not in our cabin, it was a joke. Older cabins 5-6 were rotten roofs with wasp nests and I suggest when you clean the cabin that you bring a leaf blower.

Oily mess

We arrived to a black, oily mess. They were applying black oil over gravel when we arrived. Our campsite pad was recently done as well. We had trouble getting up one of the hills with or camper because it was so wet with oil. It was supposedly not supposed to stick to anything but it stuck to everything. Our camper tires, our truck tires. The wet, oily gravel was attached to the underside of both camper and truck. After backing into our site we had to walk on the mess to finish setting up the camper. Our shoes stuck to the oil with every step. We couldn’t get into the camper without stepping on it. Our dog had it on her paws. Every where she stepped inside the camper left oil marks. I can’t believe that they couldn’t wait until after October 1st to complete this work. The Queen campground was almost full for the last weekend of the regular season.

Love the park but disappointed in maintenance

I love this park but disappointed that no maintenance is being done to control invasive plants that are destroying the park. No burning along the canyon so cedars and buckthorn are taking over.

Hidden gem

Great state park with hot showers close to Interstate 90, 4 hours from Chicago, 12 hours from Denver, 30 minutes from Sioux Falls. Very scenic walk along Split Rock River. Campsites are not close together. As we pulled into our site the wild turkeys were pulling out. Friendly staff.

Overnight stop

A beautiful overnight stop for a last minute decision to break up a long drive. There wasn’t anyone at the office when we arrived around 5:00. We didn’t see any staff or ranger while we were there. We enjoyed a walk to the bridge, the historical marker, and the view.

It was a great place to visit and camp for a long weekend. My only complaint is that most tent camping sites are too close to each other, and our spot was not very flat for a tent. But we managed and had a great time. The trails were not very long, but the terrain made up for the short trails.

Great Visit But...

Palisades is a gorgeous park with great amenities, proximately to Sioux Falls and helpful staff. Unfortunately my most recent visit did not live up to expectations. There is virtually no privacy or quiet in the tent camping spots in the old section (Queen). Lot of cars drove by in the 3 days I was there and because the main tent spot would've been a muddy mess, I put my tent up in a grassier, level spot closer to the road. It was fine after quiet hours. Speaking of which...I literally had to yell over to the cabin next to me to turn their music down after 11pm. They had it blaring from 3pm on. Quiet times is one thing, but I wanted to unplug and unwind and I shouldn't have to tell people to be considerate of others while CAMPING.

Great Spot for a Quick Nature Escape

Our campsite was great — clean and comfortable. The bathrooms were well-kept, and we really enjoyed the hiking with plenty of scenic trails to explore. We liked seeing the playground and thought it’d be perfect for when we bring the kids next time. It’s also super convenient being so close to Sioux Falls. The gentleman who checked us in was very kind and welcoming. Loved having no phone service — made it easier to unplug and relax! The only things we would have liked was a better visual or layout when reserving our site online — it was hard to tell exactly what we were getting. Also, it would’ve been helpful if, when we checked in, the staff gave a quick overview of the park — like where to find bathrooms, where we could buy things like firewood or souvenirs (if available), and a brief rundown of the trails or park features. We know we could’ve asked, but a simple welcome or orientation would make new visitors feel more informed and aware of what the park has to offer.

Perfect Camping Spot!

Wonderful location and perfect camping experience! The park was great with wonderful walking & hiking trials and nearby to additional parks and historic locations. We loved our camp site and the new facilities in the King’s Campground. Our only issue was that they mowed during our stay without notifying us, and we had grass clippings all over and into our tent. Otherwise, a great camping experience with few bugs! Oh and don’t purchase your parking passes online, we never received the information and ended up paying for our parking passes twice.

Love

The park is beautiful, clean, and has plenty to do without ever leaving - swimming, hiking, room to ride bikes, rock climbing. We went to Garretson to explore the Devil’s Gulch park which is also beautiful. Make sure to pay for your parking passes as it’s not included with the price of the campsite. We thought it would be nice if one pass was included within the price of a campsite.

A peaceful pause at Palisades

We made a quick stop at Palisades State Park. It was a peaceful break with beautiful rolling hills, wildflowers in bloom, and quiet hiking trails near the water. We ended the day with a relaxing campfire—short stay, but worth it for the calm and scenery.

Nice layout of the park. Short Hiking trails nearby. We had electric only and filled the tank on arrival. The water pressure is very low or it’s the faucet that needs replacing. In any case it took a long time to fill the tank. The host was really nice to talk to.

The hike along the King and Queen Trail was beautiful. The bathrooms were spotless. Staff was very accommodating when we asked to be moved closer to the bathhouse. It was an easy drive into Sioux Falls to enjoy the falls. I wish we didn't have to pay an entry fee for each day we stayed.

Five Star Camping

Palisades has a very unique natural features with beautiful rock formations along Split Rock Creek. The newly expanded camping area has different sites for people that like shade or open space. Facilities are clean and convenient. A great spot to unwind and relax as a destination or to visit for the night while traveling along I-90.

The campsite was very nice but due to poor phone access, reserving the site was complicated. Also frustrating to have to pay extra for the reservation and the admission as an out of state visitor. That said, if he campground was clean and quiet. Some marking on the trails would be helpful.

Excellent Park

We stayed on 10 June for one night and then again on 1 July for one night as a pass thru to Yellowstone. We loved the new King Section and the space it provides big rigs. Everything is new so the trees have not yet grown to provide shade but it was well set up with clean facilities. We were greeted by Hagee, the camp host who was very polite and helpful. We ate at the Gulch Restaurant in Garrettson and the food was very good. Highly recommend this park - its just 3 miles off I-90 so don't hesitate to stay here.

BEAUTIFUL park!!!

We just love this park. Found new places to hike again this year! We stayed in the new campground this time. No trees for shade but the site was wonderful! The showers, bathrooms, fire pit, and the Park Rangers were all really great!! Try this park! You won’t regret it.

Majestic Camping in Custer

Not only is Stockade North a beautiful campground, but the entire staff made us feel like family. We experienced many types of weather, and the folks there never missed a beat. The rest rooms are clean, the grounds are clean. I could do without the hail. :-)

Fun, Friendly, and Clean Weekend

The campground host was one of the kindest and funniest I have interacted with. We went on one of the hottest and most windy weekends of the year, so having a friendly smile to start of the weekend was great. Let us know we were in for a good weekend. Beautiful & unique park! Reservations site worked well, but maybe a little overinvolved. What was missing was the ability to pay the park entrance fee. We had to do that onsite, which was a silly when I'd paid the reservation online. The entrance fee was a surprise and another $15. Also, I would like a satellite overview on the map when selecting spots so you can gauge the site shade, privacy, etc better.

Great stay

This was our first visit to palisades sp. We were very impressed with the maintenance of the park. The trails were nicely maintained with mowing and the wood structure (such as stairs or platforms) were solid and not crumbling. The shower house in the Kings campground is the nicest we have seen. The queen campground shower was closed but it seemed they were working on getting it fixed. The pit toilets were also clean and smelled as good as was possible. Our favorite part was a nice swimming area near the bridge. The staff was very friendly and even visited our site the night before a storm and let us know where we could take shelter if needed.

Park trails are BEAUTIFUL!! But won’t go back again!! From the time we checked in till we left we were literally harassed by the game wardens for doing nothing!! We had 3 spots my nephew just got there was asked about fire wood!! Remind you we know you need certain wood but this was at NOON AND IT WAS 100 DEGREES OUT!! Every hour they came around and checked his pole for his reservation and there was 3 spots and all in my name!! That night we were all at my son’s spot and he came around and we were all watching the races outside it was 10:30 ish he asked if it was the last race and said shut it off and go inside like we were a kid!! We were not loud at all my son had a 1 yr old sleeping a 2 others, my nephew has 3 kids, and my husband and I don’t stay up late!! There was a gentleman knocking on the bathroom doors about 10:30 at night and it happened to my daughter in law. Later that night 1:30 in the morning a sheriff is driving through the park and my son waved he was texting my cousin driving through a hail storm finishing his beer. He stops and talks to him about the bathroom incident and then asks was it you? My son says NO and the sheriff says I am a little late getting here!! On Saturday they messed up on reservation when we checked in so my son all set up had to move one spot over!! And they didn’t even ask the other party if they would just take the other spot! And of all things it was a group of young kids with a tent!! Then that night we are spot and they stop AGAIN while watching races and told us after the main was over we had to shut it off!! IT WASNT LOUD AND NOBODY WAS CLOSE TO US AND COULDNT HEAR IT WITH AIR CONDITIONERS GOING CAUSE IT WAS 100 degrees!!

Pretty but not favorite

Stayed in a cabin, pretty hiking trails. Disappointed in no WiFi or cell phone signal for keeping eye on weather. Tried to go to kids movie night that was advertised and flyers handed out and no one showed up. Checking in was not a good experience was told key was in lock box, code did not work, staff got it to work, but key was not in lock box.

Great find

This park was a great find. We needed a stop over place to stay on our way west and we booked for one night. The park is beautiful, there were nice trails along the river and in the fields. Gorgeous views of the rocks along the river. The bathrooms had hot showers and were clean.

Parking permits problems-ticket

Loved our visit but got a ticket for our towed vehicle after spending $60 the day before. I really dislike your separate charge for camping and a day pass policy. In all the state parks I’ve visited in other states this fee is included. When added into cost to visit it makes it very expensive. Really soured my visit until ranger listened to me about the car being towed and covered under the $60 fee.

Speeding

Unsafe to walk around the campground. Especially queens side. Nobody follows speed limits and younger adults rip through going 30+. I stayed for 1 night and about 10pm 3 assumed day use drove 3 trucks around the campsites back and forth being extremely loud and reckless

History, Majesty, Hospitality

A truly special state park and we've been to many. We loved being able to see the ancient rock structures in such a picturesque setting. We received a very warm welcome from Camp Host Merle and the office crew when we came in. Facilities and amenities were top-notch. We will be excited to come back and perhaps get a spot in the more "rustic" tree-filled section of the park, but for the last weekend in May - site 20 was perfect. Thanks to all of the hard working staff who help make this place so special.

Great clean park

This was our first time at Palisades state park. It was really nice, clean and the host on our weekend was super knowledgeable! He greeted us after we were all set up. Gave us some great trails to check out and would be easy with our smaller kids.

Great stay

We reserved ?? spot and glad we did. It was paved and flat. We have a 35" motorhome but could fit larger. Enjoyed our stay.

New campground

We were in the King Campground. Nice large spots. The one porta-toilet near us was almost unable to get to because of the mud & dirt. There is no playground in the main camping area. Since this is a new campground camping spring & fall will be the best for awhile until the trees grow. The campground host is awesome!!!

The GFP has done an awesome job on the new camping addition to this park! The camping spots are big and spread apart so you are not on top of the next campers! Bathroom and showers were clean and well designed. The hiking trails and the additions of firepits and benches along the Split Rock Creek is great. One of the new park shelters has a gas grill that can be used if you have resereved the shelter. The new playgrounds are awesome and more handicapped friendly!

Overall stunning, with a few draw backs

I loved everything about this place hidden in plain sight. The ONLY drawback is that we didnt have anywhere flat on our site to pitch the tent in the grass and ended up sleeping on a slant and by morning I was asleep in my car. Great spot for day use or a trailer but not so much for a tent.

Passing Through!

It was super easy to book, we arrived late after a day of driving and "check in" was easy. We were able to quickly grab our keys from the fron office lock box and head to our cabin to crash. That being said, we will likely be back! It was a lovely area, river was gorgeous, facilities were in great shape. We were able to get up early the next morning, "check out" the same way and hit the road! Very convenient and great for road tripping or would be a great camping get away!

Campsites are clean, well shaded, easy to back into our spot. We did have a power issue when we first arrived, but we contacted a park official and they sent someone out and fixed the issue. I did like the fact that the showers were free and the water was nice and hot. The only complaint i would have is that the "full hookup" sites are not full hookup. No water or sewer. At least there was a fill and dump station.

quiet, peaceful campsite

Site 83 has some trees and is mostly level. The fireplace is a good size! The view and tail access is convenient. Also, just a warning, ticks were already out in April and u found one after the visit.
