Excellent campground

Please let campers know that the posts can be removed while parking the camper, and then replaced. We struggled to avoid three posts. Later in the weekend, we found out that you can take them out of the buckets. We had never seen that before.

Oahe downstream

Everything was great except that they have removed the garbage cans from the campgrounds. They have 3 dumpsters where you enter the park, but they are all ratchet strapped shut. If you are leaving, you have to block the road with your camper, undo the straps, throw trash away, and redo the straps. Seems silly.

Oahe Downstream camping

The camp hostess provided some information about what to do in the area, we are not fishermen. It was a driving tour of Pierre and fort Pierre. We loved it. The host loaned us a plug when ours shorted out after a rain storm. Very nice couple.

Oahe Campground

Sally and Paul, our camp hosts, were so welcoming! They went out of their way to ensure we had everything we needed and told us to come to them if anything came up, no matter the time of day or night. I have camped in a lot of places, and I have never been to a campground more clean and well-maintained. The fire pits were clean, the campsite was in great condition, and the shower house was exceptionally well maintained! Kudos to Paul, Sally, and the rest of the Oahe team!

Group Lodge Perfect for our Meeting

Our group hosted a 2-session meeting at the Group Lodge. Everything we needed was there, easy to find, clean and usable. We set up a sound system for our worship group, used tables for seating and meals and to display vendor and free materials. We used the refrigerator, freezer, oven, microwave, and coffee maker.

Campground 2 experience

Very well shaded and close access to the beach. However, the comfort stations/restrooms in Campground 2 are some of the oldest and dirtiest I've seen. They desperately need an update.

Park is nice, but out of staters pay almost double

I'm OK with out-of staters paying a bit more, but out-of state reservation fee ($10) on top of out of state day use fee $15 took my $30 campsite to $55. That's crazy.

Amazing!

This campground is a hidden gem in our great state. It has amazing trees, right by the water, and is incredibly peaceful. Paul and Sherry are awesome hosts and the place is clean and safe. I can't wait to go back!

Love South Dakota

Our first interaction when we got to the State Park was with Sally. She was amazing. She walked us through all of what we had to know, and was just absolutely more than accommodating to us. Our next impression of the park staff was our interaction with Jackie. She was the cleaning lady for our cabin an and she went over and above to make sure that our stay was great. With customer service so hard to find nowadays this state park has two exceptional employees.

Great Experinece!

When we visited the campground there was 3 consecutive days of 100+ degree temps, The comfort facilities were hot, no A/C or air flow. There were seasonal dead insects in cobwebs that should have been removed. Overall, the facilities were clean and the showers were awesome. I was pleased to see that local sheriff cruiser would make regular visits to the campground. Highly recommend this campground.

Fun time!

Cabin was nice and clean, but the bugs were terrible, it didn't seem like they sprayed at all for mosquitoes, also cabin outside and deck were covered in cobwebs and spiders. Other than that it was perfect!

Memorable Family Reunion

Pierre, SD was the perfect mid way point for our Family Reunion. Our group came from Utah, Kansas, Wisconsin and MN to spend a weekend with cousins, siblings and 92 year old great grandmother. The Lodge served our group of 60+ very well. It had sufficient seating inside and outside. The grounds provided space for our family to play games, campfire, fish and feel safe with little ones being outside. There were multiple Airbnb's, campsites for our family members to book in the area that was within a 10-15 minute drive to the Lodge. We appreciated the availability of the two RV sites and tent camping at the lodge. The full kitchen had everything we needed to set up and serve meals. We appreciate having the ranger come on our last night to inform us of the Tornado Watch and where we should go for safety. Thankfully it never upgraded to a Tornado Warning.

Best Campground in The State

This campground provides great hosts. Super nice to chat with and they're always there to greet you when you show up. Bathrooms are cleaned regularly and the overall condition of the campground is absolutely stunning. Always a fan of Downstream!

Unhappy camper

After hot day fishing we had hoped for a place to cool down. The air conditioner was not working properly. The compressor was very noisy and squealed. It would not cool below 77 degrees. Also was disappointed that there was not a plug in near bed for cpap machine. There were several leaves that had blown on the deck and sidewalk.

We have been camping at oahe downstream for years. This trip was cut short due to a severe weather warning, we took our camper home on a Saturday evening instead of our normal Sunday morning. We left a bundle of unburned firewood next to the fire pit. After checkout at 4 PM I was left a voicemail saying I had been charged $50 for leaving said firewood. I called and said I would pick it up: one- to have the wood, two- to avoid the charge…was told neither option were available. The park attendant said they could not tell where the wood came from so it could not be left. If that is the case why do you allow people to bring wood into the park and not have to be purchased there if you are concerned with where it comes from ? Also a courtesy call that this bundle of wood was going to create a $50 charge would’ve been nice to know. Trashing a site is one thing, but leaving a bundle of wood does not equal that steep of a fee. Sure you sold it anyway!

Wonderful weekend

Restrooms were clean. Park staff were friendly. Campground was well maintained and we had pretty well behaved camping neighbors. We rode the dirt bikes at the ohv area and went kayaking. We were in site 98 and it would be nice to have a mowed path for easier access to the water. Otherwise all was great!

Wonderful Time!

The staff was so accommodating. They let us have access to the Lodge a bit early since no others had reservations. The Lodge was wonderfully clean and well-lit. Everything worked great. We have reserved the Lodge three times in the past five years and have never been disappointed with its condition. The staff has always worked hard to accommodate our needs. We're very blessed to have such a nice facility in Pierre.

Very Disappointed

We camped during what would be considered the "off season" I guess. Now they warn you some amenities such as the bathhouses may be closed or water shut off, which isn't out of the ordinary for the time of year. But the fact that people have to pay full price to camp where there is no running water, trash cans, and closed bathhouses is a joke. The vault toilets had no toilet paper, and although a park employee later on said they would have someone fix that, they never did. We ended up leaving our own in there for the very few people around the campground to use. There weren't even garbage cans for anyone to throw trash away. All over the country a person can get way better camping amenities for a fraction of what the South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks charges for this type of camping experience. While the campground was empty, the only other people to come in and camp had to take the spot right next to us for some reason, when they could've picked any other spot and gave all of us a little privacy and space. That's personal preference, but definitely annoying. Then at some point a park employee came around to them and struck up a friendly conversation making sure to let them know that if they needed anything to just ask, yet completely ignored us sitting in the next spot over. He looked our way and knew we were there, so it wasn't as if he didn't know anyone was around. All in all it was a sad showing for the South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks.

Great Facilities, Great Help

We've always had a great stay at Oahe Downstream. Whether it's in the modern cabins or in one of the camping spots, the facilities have been extremely well cared for and the campground hosts/hostesses are always helpful. The workers who clean have always been extremely thorough and helpful with whatever we needed. When we have a request, we've always received quick attention. The modern cabins are great for family gatherings, as the buildings are spacious and we have everything we need.

This park is beautiful year-round. Recently was had a family reunion, renting several modern cabins. The space is always clean and comfortable. It is an affordable way to gather without the mess of outdoor cooking or the expence of dining out. Our state parks need more modern cabins.

Oahe downstream #3

We stayed at Oahe Downstream campground #3 this visit as campground #2 was full according to the SD outdoor website. #3 is a beautiful campground with good facilities. As far as improvements? The remnants of the cut grass could be blown off of the parking pads in the spots to keep from tracking it into the RV. My main complaint is with the SD Go Outdoors website. Of all the things SD does right, this web site is absolutely horrible. There is no log in tab on the home page, on my iPad the keychain doesn’t work for user name / password fill. When logged in, if you back out of the page to look at something else like your calendar, when you go back to the page it boots you off and you have to start all over again. The next thing is that in regards to the modern cabins, the website shows them as rented a lot of the time, yet when I have been at Oahe Downstream it is obvious that no one is there. I ended up calling the reservation number and verified that there was indeed vacancies but the web site showed them as rented. So now if I want to stay at the modern cabins I just call the reservation number. Please, please make this website easier to use and accurate.

Another great stay

I have stayed at this campground 5 times now. Hosts and staff on site have always been friendly and helpful. Everything is clean, no litter. Bathhouse is always clean! I tried to use the on line system to book my campsite, and that would not work for me. I then called the phone number on the SD parks website. Got my reservation done fast, so I was a ...... happy camper. Sorry, had to make that joke.

Love it but Bees

We have stayed at this campground many times and loved it. This time however, we had a bad experience with bees. We could not eat or spend time outside because of the bees swarming us all the time. Then I got stung. I don’t know if there is any spraying that can be done or not. But the bees really put a damper on our week.
