Musty cabin
The cabin smelled musty like it had gotten wet. The mattresses were hardly mattresses but more like mats & very uncomfortable. Farm Island & Oahe Downstream campgrounds have very comfortable mattresses & don’t smell musty. Also we had a bat over the door on the outside.

We come ever my year for a week during folk fest. We were surprised the park passes went up for out of state residents. Also I feel they either need to have an area where the park rangers don’t enforce quite time so early. Most people come back from the music and want to have a fire and a few beverages. Every year we camp in the same area with a large group of people, noise has never been an issue with any campers. The park pass increase and the rangers being so strict on quiet time may end up pushing us away

Expensive Stay for a N0nResident
A non resident fee AND a day pass fee added to our one day camping (RV) reservation was a surprise. Its not practical to do that again when when passing through South Dakota. Nice out of the way park, but the effort to get there just isn't worth the cost anymore.

Great family time
Renting the cabin next to a csmpsite gave us great flexibility for family members to come and go. Even our 2 mo. Old grandson was able to spend a couple of nights!

Fine State Park To Stay As Travelers.
Check in was fast. I’m out of state so got dinged for that. Understandable. But the parking fee was a surprised. Already payed for my site and was coming in at sunset so I was ok with it. Other than that nice place I’d recommend to anyone passing through.

The park was clean, pads level, but security is a bit lax, very loud drunken neighbors shouting and yelling at others to come join them even after asked not to. Park police just drive by.

Newton Hills Camping
I tent camped at this facility, and let me tell you, I was blown away! The sites are secluded back into the woods, away from all the campers. It was quiet and so peaceful. My neighbors got a bit loud near midnight and camp staff addressed it right away! The hiking trails are beautiful. The only thing I wish this campground had was better fishing! Overall a great experience and I would say again in a heartbeat.

Upper Lodge
We enjoyed our stay at this lodge. It was spacious, and it allowed us to enjoy the lodge's deck as well. We had several guests as it was a group birthday party.
I would suggest some changes. The state's website regarding the lodges and the Modern Cabin isn't complete for information. The website says you must bring your own linens, but does not say you need to bring your own pillows and blankets, too. The Lake Thompson Lodge had provided blankets and pillows when we held prior birthday parties there. Complete information is needed.
Also, the website lists the Modern Cabin as plural. Cabins. Our group used both lodges and the Modern Cabin. We could've used more than one cabin, but the website is misleading in that regard.
We did enjoy our stay. We'd just like to see the website updated as to what is actually needed and available.

Great amenities, helpful staff
Campground was very clean and full, but sites were spread out so neighboring groups did not feel intrusive. Park staff assisted us with an equipment failure and explaining things to do at the park. Attending a few programs and have fun learning about owls!

We absolutely loved camping at Newton Hills - the hiking was unbelievable. They had several programs going on while we there, but we did not participate, we were too busy taking in the beautiful hikes. I only wish they would update the site stating that there is swimming, fishing, and kayak rentals since the lake is dry. We traveled from quite a ways and we had no idea.

Nice peaceful spot
I like that the tent spots were a little off the beaten path in their own little circle drive. One of the tent spots was in the grassy area in the middle of the circle which I thought was a little weird, but the spots around the edge were nice. There's a bath house with showers and flush toilets within an easy walk of the tent area where I was (camp spots #113 - #117).

We had an amazing weekend at Newton Hills, made even more awesome with a very knowledgeable guide who expertly led us on an evening hike to find nocturnal birds and creatures. All ages in our group loved it. Highly recommend!

Opening Weekend
Very disappointed in the appearance of the Campground given it was Opening Weekend, and they should know that lots of people would be driving through. It was not all mowed (typical)., and our fire pit /ring had not been cleaned. We were also surprised that at no time during the weekend (Friday- Sunday) did we see the Campground Host. We did leave a day early due to the incoming weather.

There was no communication regarding where to get the key. When I finally found the key box the passcode did not work. Had to go to rangers house and he had just had surgery but did help me get the key. The appliances need updating. The fireplace could use an update I know it is winter but having someone to call would be helpful

Nice park!
Getting firewood was impossible. It was pretty cold, and no one was staffing the office. All the wood was locked up. In MN they have an app that allows you to buy wood without going to the office. If you don’t know where to get wood outside the park, you are out of luck making a fire. That was literally my only complaint. The park is so pretty, the hikes were amazing. We loved it, and bonus that dogs are welcome in some cabins!!

stayed at horse camp at Newton Hills. Made 4 reservations for myself and friends.I called ahead to let them know we were on our way to our reserved spots. Was told everything was ready for us. Upon arriving to our site a little after 4PM check in time, 3 of the 4 sites we had reserved had other campers in them. Tags with our name on them was clearly marked on pst. Campers at two of the sites agreed to move as they knew it wasn't there site. Campers at the third site were out riding horses we were told. We went to park office and was told by person in charge that "nothing they could do about it and it wasn't their problem" He proceeds to call person who was in our site and told him what the problem was. Apparently, they were friends. An hour or more went by before we were able to finally get the person out of our site and we were able to get our horses and ourselves into site. Was told by park personnel, we would get a partial refund - have received nothing.

Pretty Nice
We stayed at the Scout Lodge, which was nice. We would have liked to have a vacuum or mop available to clean up better after staying, as other state lodges asked us to do that. The “lake” is a puddle and the beach is nowhere near the water and is overgrown. Not sure if this is normal or a dry year, but disappointed that wasn’t available.

Everything was great except that we had to move the picnic table (very heavy) back onto the deck of our cabin. Be sure to hike the gorgeous Woodland Trail.

The website said that fishing, canoes, and kayaks were available for use. However, Lake Lakota had receded about 150-200 yards from the previous shoreline. We purchased fishing license and brought all our fishing supplies with us only to be disappointed. I believe the website or FB page should be current but neither were in regards to this condition.
The campground was quiet, had yard games for checking out and activities throughout the weekend.
