Nov camping cabin stay
The campground in November was typically empty for this time of the year. The camping cabins are very convenient. The outhouse toilets were clean, well stocked with supplies & the automatic motion lights in are appreciated. The bunk liners though had a fair amount of dust on them, many strands of pet hair, & a fair amount of stains. I’d recommend bringing an extra sheet or some sort of liner to go on them

October 2025 Trip
Overall very very nice stay! Glad the showers and flush toilets were open in late October. Very nice maintenance man! Had pretty much the entire park to ourselves. We stayed in a cabin that was very clean. I just wish we didn’t have to pay $60 for the entrance fee for the days we stayed. We bought an annual because it was just as much as the daily fees.

The mosquitoes were absolutely awful. At one point the side of our camper was covered and we could not enter or it would fill with them. Bathroom facility had mold in the showers, on walls and curtains.

Lake Thompson Cabin
The park itself is great. Lots of trails for exercise. The cabin I stayed in was not clean. Cobwebs everywhere and the mattresses are awful. I honestly thought I was sleeping on a box spring. Make sure you bring our own padding to put on the mattress. They badly in need of replacing.

Lake Thompson Lodge
You must provide bedding and towels, but everything else you need is provided. Great parking for trucks and boats, we had 3 rigs, with electrical for charging trolling motor batteries. The air conditioning works great and was appreciated when coming in from fishing 90+ temps. Also the park staff is courteous and made sure to let us know when mosquito fogging would occur. Fish cleaning station is close by and well maintained. Have always been very happy with this lodge.

NO STAFF!! Lawn was mowed just before we arrived, large wads of grass everywhere. Vault toilet was almost completely full and in dire need of pumping. Entrance gate building was never open the whole week. Self serve kiosks to purchase passes. We actually had a CO get out and check the plug on our parked boat that hadn't been in the water for 2 days due to wind. The complete lack of staffing is getting ridiculous. For the money that is charged for cabins, sites,( both camper and tent). You should be able to at least have one live person other than the campground host to answer questions. I almost forgot, the entire campground lost power the first night and there was nobody to report it to.

Love SD state parks
Nice big sites, we had a beautiful water view! Rangers & hosts were very friendly, stopped even to check on us after a storm. The campgrounds are all so far very clean and well managed.

When we got to the park, our site hadn't been mowed yet, and the fire pit hadn't been cleaned. Don't mind partially burnt wood but resent the idiots who use the fire pit as a trash can! The next day we flagged down one of the guys mowing and asked them to do our sites. He did an excellent, respectful job. The park looked very nice once almost everything was mowed. Vaulted toilet and bath house was very clean.

Fun weekend
We had a lot of fun playing games and going on boat rides with the grandkids. It got a little windy but we had good success fishing, catching both walleye and white bass.

Wasn't able to camp
We were not able to camp that weekend and I thought I had the reservation canceled but apparently I didn't click enough buttons. I got to the point that I agreed that we would have a $15 cancellation fee and I confirm that and I thought I had the reservation canceled. I don't like to cancel the reservations but this could not be helped and it's hard to know 90 days in advance.

Beautiful Lake Thompson
This is now on my list of top three state parks in South Dakota for camping. The camping spots are large and easily accommodate our big rig. The beach was VERY well kept. The lake was clean. I absolutely loved the bike trails. The local sheriff made rounds through the campground several times a day. This added to the feeling of security.
IMPORTANT to keep in mind when picking a spot. The far east circle is quite a ways from the nearest bath house. Also, there isn't easy access to the water there either. Still beautiful and wonderful, but if you can't walk far or well, you may want to stay in the main section.

Cabin was cute and seemed clean. The air conditioning didnt work correctly. It was so hot the first night my kids and slept with wet towels for blankets. The 2nd night was so extremely hot, it had to be over 90 degrees in the cabin. We ended up driving home late that night because it was unbearable.

Father's day weekend
We had 8 spots for the weekend. The grass was ankle high on all spots. We arrived on Tues & they were mowing but never came to our section. Was completely skipped. I would think the spots that are reserved earlier should be mowed first. Little disappointed.
