We are thankful for a Thanksgiving trip to Custer SP that included watching bighorn sheep and bison move through our campground. Our camp host also amazing.

We love staying at Custer State Park at the Game Lodge campground. We were more than excited to learn that the showers and restrooms were open during our stay! The campground hosts were amazing, friendly and kept the grounds spotless! We’re so thankful for our parks system and all that are a part of it!

Private Bison Jams
What a wonderful time of year in Custer State Park! We shared the Game Lodge Campground with two dozen bighorn sheep, herds of deer, and few stray bison. Animals definitely outnumbered the humans. Not only did we have our own private bison jams, the trails were quiet, and we also saw too many elk, pronghorn, and prairie dogs to count...and don't forget the burros, they are always happy to see you. The key is to get off the beaten path. Take that gravel road. Head out to the Wildlife Loop at dawn and/or dusk, but drive slowly. Take the time to just sit, observe, and listen. You'll be surprised what happens when you just wait quietly.
The Game Lodge Campground was fantastic. We were surprised to have running water, hot showers, and clean restrooms.

Hike
I absolutely love this park! I wish it was closer to home for me. I have yet to hike a trail that didn’t offer something spectacular. This was the first year we stayed in a camper cabin. Offered everything we needed since we spend most our time on the trails. The park is extremely dog friendly as well. The first time I visited with my pup I e-mailed just to ask if there were any places she wasn’t allowed. It almost seemed in their response that they were excited my pup got to share the experience with me. We have been there a few times now and will continue to go back, hopefully yearly.

Great Experience!
We camped in the Blue Bell Campground (site BB3E) for 2 nights and had a wonderful experience. The campground was clean and quiet. The restrooms were very well maintained and very clean. (And the showers were nice and hot!) Campground hosts were very friendly and available. We would definitely stay in this campground again.

Hazy but great hiking weather
The Blue Bell camping cabins are such a great value and beautiful surroundings. Perhaps my 8th visit here and worth the 10 hour drive. Even the 16A detour was manageable - very well marked. This location is serene yet close to Custer and other scenic sites. Highly recommend

Hidden gem
Cute lil cabin tucked away with ample privacy. Plenty of space for my pup to explore and for me to set up anything extra. Host was friendly, welcoming my arrival while sharing some bits about the area. Shower house super clean and well maintained. Would highly recommend staying here. Cabin is a bit small for larger family if it were to be a day needing to stay in. Definitely more of a place to lay your head and change an outfit. Has four beds set up as two bunk beds with one bed being I believe a full or queen size, others are twins. Mattress not bad, bring own linens. No mini fridge so bring an cooler. Over all just a great gem tucked in Custer park that I have stayed at several times.

Custer State Park Campgrounds
I came for the Buffalo Roundup, it had been 15 years since I last visited Custer State Park, at that time I realized I should have spent more time in the park when visiting the Black Hills. I stayed for a week this time and it was well worth every minute. This is such an outstanding part in every way. That includes the campground, Bison Center, wildlife viewing, gorgeous landscapes, employees and volunteers. The park is well run and maintained, much better that many National Parks. My son & I have been to 38 national parks and Custer rates up there with Glacier, Grand Canyon, Grand Tetons & Big Bend. Thank you South Dakota for this park and doing such a good job to running the jewel that it is.

Always Amazing!
We've stayed at Game Lodge Campground a couple of times over the years along with other campgrounds in the park . Game Lodge is our favorite. It's clean, quiet, has friendly staff there. We just love how peaceful it is. This time we were in site 27 and had the herd of big horns jump the fence and come and eat grass right behind our camper. Quite the experience!

We enjoyed our stay at Custer State Park. It’s very convenient for all your sightseeing. Don’t forget to get water before you back into your site. Perfect Cabin and Location
The cabin at Stockade Lake South was great. However, make sure you understand there's only beds, table and electricity. Walk to bath/toilet house is a concern. Outhouse was closer, but smelly as people kept closing the door. .Annual Buffalo Round-Up was our goal to see.. Don't need to go over at 1:30 am. Also, the coordinating Arts&Crafts Fair that same weekend was very good.

Great campground & staff
Beautiful and small-ish campground close to park trails and activities. Hot showers even! My only beef is a staff member came and pounded on my camper at 11:55 announcing checkout. I understand keeping the schedule in a busy park/campground but this was disruptive as I was on a work call. I was also completely packed up with a clean site and ready to roll when I was planning to wrap up the call at 11:59. That said, it was minor and didn't inconvenience my trip or stay.
The regular evening host/check in person was very friendly and helpful and the whole system is very organized.

Custer Family Camping at Blue Bell
We had a great stay at the Blue Bell Campground with our kids (ages 4, 7 and 10). The campground store has everything you would need along with great Custer souvenirs that we grabbed on our way out. There's a nice playground near the bath house in the cabin loop, which also has a family bathroom. The facilities and campsites are all well kept. My only comment is that, at least in sites 10 and 11, the fire rings are on the opposite side of the campsite then what would make sense . . . we were in a motorhome, so we just pulled nose in so that our ring was still on our patio side. The camp host was very attentive and quickly to our campsite upon arrival to answer questions and give the lay of the land.

One of the best state parks
Fall color cannot be timed, but we hit it just right. Aspens and green ash trees were in full yellow color, and we did both our drives in the morning when the light was good, and traffic was less. We RV in a 25-footer with no tow, so we rented a Jeep in Custer to drive Needles Highway and Iron Mountain Road and visit Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse over 6–7 hours. Another morning we drove the Wildlife Loop: Wow. We rank the Loop experience higher than Needles, and Needles was very good. Enjoyed our white-table-cloth dinner at the State Game Lodge (buffalo ribs, elk ravioli . . . everything was outstanding. We really liked the Game Lodge Campground. Sites had a good amount of separation and were Starlink-friendly.

Grace Coolidge CG is a nice & clean campground. The camp host, Deb, was very friendly and knowledgeable about the area.
Buffalo Round-Up.. I would suggest that the concessions at each location stay open to sell water & soda u til the buffalo have been put in the corrals. They stopped selling at 9:00 am & the buffalo didn’t even make it to the location until about 10:40. It was over 70 degrees and warm with no shade. Most people came unprepared without anything to drink.

I camped in a tent camp site one night and a camping cabin the next night. Overall everything was super clean. Bathrooms and showers were in great shape. Normally I expect to see spiders and whatnot in the vault toilets but there were none. Center lake was the tent site, beautiful view of the lake by the shower house. Blue bell for the camping cabin.. the cabin was amazing! It had heat, AC, electricity, table, 2 sets of bunk beds. Plenty of room for a group of 5 even though it was just me. My favorite part about the park is that it felt like a giant drive thru safari. I recommend taking the wildlife loop to see the donkeys! I spent 2 days in the park and feel like I needed 2 more just to really see everything.

Campground needs some work! Showers didn’t have warm water and the huge fan running makes it feel freezing! Most of the sites are VERY unlevel. Dogs go hiking!
The campground was great and very well maintained. Our cabin was very clean and had good room. Beds were fairly comfortable. The bathrooms were individual rooms with shower, toilet and sink, so very private and very clean. The campground and rest of the park had a lot of trails and easy for us to take our Labradors with us on their leashes.

Best camping spot!
We stayed in South Stockade Lake and I feel like it's location is the best! It's right next to Custer, convenient for ice and restaurants. The land is massive, so much to explore there. We probably only hiked within a .5 mile radius and there was so much to see. The only thing that would make it better, is to add a mini fridge.

Another Great Stay
We have been visiting Custer State Park and camping at the State Game Lodge for over 15 years now and will go nowhere else. We used to tent camp and now stay in a camping cabin; #8 is our favorite but #6 is now a close second. The camping sites are always clean, as are the bathrooms and laundry facilities. Staff is friendly and helpful when needed. I do need to say that our camp attendant this time was the best we've ever encountered. He facilitated our move from #7 to #8 and made the transition seamless. He also made more daily loops of the campground than we have ever seen before.
We're not sure how many more years we will be camping but, as long as we are, we will be returning to Custer State Park.
PS Do the wildlife loop early in the morning. Less traffic and more wildlife.

Wonderful visit
Beautiful park, we stayed at the stockade north campground. Need to do better with the vault toilets. Also, they ask you to put a sticker on the inside of the front windshield, it stuck to the window and had to use Goo Gone to get it off. Also, the reservation email just had initials to tell us which campground we were staying at. We went in the opposite side of the park from where we were staying. Should put the name of the campground on the reservation.

New Family Tradition
This was our second camping trip to Custer in 13 months. We live in Illinois and love how Custer feels like a world away, but is easily accessible to us. This time, we had a creekside site at the Game Lodge Campground [last time we stayed in the same campground but in a non creek site]. We love this campground because we can easily access the main visitor center, State Game Lodge, and the Coolidge General Store. Facilities in the campground are well maintained. My kids are currently 12, 11, and 9 and they're already talking about returning again next year.

Beautiful
The park is wonderful, so much to see and lots of hiking trails! If you want to alter your reservation when you are in the park...impossible.There is no cell service and no Wifi available. There are NO staff in the park that can do this, it's all online or a phone call.So if you don't have either you can' t do anything. We found a person that directed us to the highest spot in our campground and got a cell signal, then waited for 15 minutes in the hot sun before someone answered the phone. My suggestion drive into the town of Custer and do all of you calls, reservations from there.Have a great time, it's a top notch park!

I tent camped four nights at the Grace Coolidge tent area at site 22. Thought it was located down a very short hill, it ended up being the most secluded, with a nice grassy area looking at a rock cliff with a small stream flowing beneath it.
I've camped in several state parks and the restroom/shower facility at this campground was the nicest/cleanest I've ever encountered.

website
French Creek is great. Expect longer trails that are poorly marked. Also, the app for the map does not download there, nor is it an easy app to navigate which is the case for the gooutdoorssouthdakota website. One of the worst that I have experienced. I have used multiple map apps while riding SUV & snowmobiles without a problem. This one is very difficult to figure out. also, had a funeral so we went riding a week sooner than originally planned, canceled our reservation for the following week. Said we were qualified for full refund and that we should expect $ in 2-3 days. Everything looked good and I exited the site. Got an email reminding me that we had upcoming reservations( that we had cancelled) while gone and we were not able to follow up. Now, when I got home I see that we didn't get reinbursed and the cancellation never happened. Again, this is a poor website. We liked it so much better when we could go right to the Park we wanted to stay at and not navigate through all of them.
And again, while French Creek is great, take some notes from the snowmobile trails in the Blackhills and have maps and good directions at intersections on trails.

This was probably our 12th visit to the park....always stay at Game Lodge campground. Tent sites in the past, and now that we're older, cabins. It's quiet, spacious, great facilities and close to the Wild Life Loop. We did have a rip-snorter of a thunderstorm our last night there this year! Thunder shook the cabin! Center Lake 9 ft clearance restriction -ugh!
During same day reservation process for Center lake camping I was asked the length and width of RV but not height. There is a 9.8 clearance restriction. Out RV is 11 feet. Driving in as it begins to get dark and paying park fee, only to discover that we couldn’t access the camp site was super disappointing and stressful.

OK for two nights
Campsite was okay, although traffic noise on Hwy 16A was quite loud. Bathroom light was way too bright (should be shielded!) and lit up entire campground. Showers are across the Hwy, not a bad trek. Shower door wouldn't latch, Ranger said they are fixed frequently, but best to shove chair against it instead. Nice little hike around nearby lake. Friendly Ranger and fellow campers.

We love Custer State Park. We just stayed for a week and would love to have made it two. The facilities are always clean. The staff is friendly. There is a ton of things to do. We visited every historic site, fished, swam, went to the education and visitor centers, hiked, explored Needles Hwy, the pig tails, and took several trips around the wildlife loop. We saw nearly every type of wildlife known in the park and even saw a bonus bobcat. Great experience! We had an RV site and 2 cabins. Everything was wonderful.

Great site
Game lodge campground has always been our family's goto. We stayed in site #18, which is a great location, just one item for safety, the edge of the paved pad is getting a real high drop off to the ground from the campers door side which we understand is from use traffic. Maybe a little maintenance to fill this in some so it's not an ankle twister.

Beautiful campsites & covered horse pens
The campsites with electric & the covered horse pens are wonderful. The camp hosts, Bob & Crystal, were great. My only complaint & reason why we won’t be coming back is because of the bull bisons on the horse trails. We had one come at us & snorting on a trail, my horse freaked out & started bucking. I stayed on, but I would have been hurt pretty bad if I had landed on those rocks. We then had to bush wack our way out of his area. We encountered Bulls on the horse trails 3 different times. It’s just too dangerous with all the rocks & trying to avoid bulls.

Perfect Spot
We stayed at Game Lodge and it was the perfect location for our family to visit the wildlife loop, we ended up driving in both mornings and evenings that we stayed, the bison were often just inside the park. We also were happy to find there was plenty of room at our site for our large tent and the kids loved playing along the stream.

Custer State Park is absolutely beautiful and the campgrounds are very nice and maintained well. The only possible improvement is to offer WI-FI. I think people would pay extra just to have that option.

3 days camping and exploring the Custer area
This was the nicest state park I’ve ever visited. We loved the Needles and Mountain View Highways. It’s a beautiful area. The South Stockade campground was a good size and the facilities were clean and the temperature inside was great morning and afternoon. Our only complaint is that the tent site was not level which made it difficult to move around inside the tent.

Perfect base camp for our family!
Our stay at Gamelodge exceeded our expectations. We booked it hoping for just a simple place to sleep between our hikes and activities. The cabin was clean and had better amenities than expected. The porch was nice and had an outdoor outlet which was handy. The picnic was nice and large and the firepit was nice with a grate. It perfectly met our needs. The facilities were clean and conveniently located. The staff was friendly and helpful. Overall the campground was quiet and felt very safe. We enjoyed the access to fishing also.

Great value, would stay again!
We stayed in one of the basic cabins. At $60 a night, I felt it was an incredible value. This was a 2 night stop on a week long road trip. It was so nice to be able to skip setting up a tent for a reasonable price. The cabin was clean and that is all we were hoping for! The bathrooms were also the cleanest we encountered out of all the campgrounds we stayed at. Our cabin had the bonus of a being the furthest in the back so we had a lot of privacy which was really nice. The store was close we could restock ice or do laundry when needed. The washing machines could use some cleaning. That would be my only complaint. I would definitely stay here again!

We stayed in Stockade South Cabin#3 this past week and are amazed to see the cabin exceeded our expectations. It was very well maintained with separate AC and heater. The showers and bathrooms are well-lit and very well-maintained and kept clean at ANYTIME of the day and night as well. All though the camp site is more than 2 miles inside from the main road, its very well maintained and is within walking distance to the lake itself. Highly recommend and would prefer to return anytime.

Horse camping at French Creek - trails well marked, horses must have shoes! Rocky in places on some trails. The many trails offer a variety of flora and fauna to enjoy. The campground is immaculate, well cared for and the facilities keep getting better. The corrals are now covered and soon there will be water taps right by the corrals. The campground host is gracious and helpful. The Park Staff are friendly and do a great job! This is just the most peaceful place to enjoy riding.

Sylvan Lake Campground is great
We really enjoyed Sylvan Lake Campground, it's just minutes from the lake as well as hiking trails and Needles Eye Tunnel. There is a hiking trail from the campground to the lake that we didn't have a chance to use, but guessing it's around .25 miles. Was pleased with the modern bathrooms with showers. The campground host made a few recommendations for our time in the area that proved to be great advice as well!

Stockade Lake short stay
We very much enjoyed our quick stay at Custer St Park. We stayed here on our way out to Montana for two nights to explore the area and truly enjoyed the experience. Making out of state reservations was simple and easy and I was able to do so with a short amount of time, even during Sturgis bike week!
The only minor thing that would have made our registration easier would have been to list the name of the campground on our confirmation email. With the lack of cell service in the park, I downloaded the reminder email but it only listed the site number, not the name of the campground. Would have helped us navigate a bit better knowing which campground we were going to. Thankfully, your amazing volunteers helped us figure it out based on the letters in front of the site number! Overall, an amazing stay, we will definitely be back some day.

Camping ruined by motorcycles.
We were excited for the first family vacation we were able to have in 7 years, but it was ruined by motorcycles everywhere we went. The loud engines from early in the morning until late at night scared all the wildlife away and ruined the forest experience. The animal loop was pretty much empty. I get that the Sturgis rally is a huge boost for the local economy, but maybe there could be rules, or at least strong suggestions about when and where motorcycles are allowed. Especially the really loud ones.

Pleasant stay-few recommendations
The visit is nice-the noise from the traffic can be a bit much but we also did go at the very beginning of the rally so there was an uptick in traffic. Facilities were overall pretty nice and the area was beautiful and well maintained. My only suggestion is to please increase the shower time. You have to repeatedly press a button outside of the shower ever minute and a half in order to get water to shower-what person do you know that takes only a minute and a half long shower? So you’re stuck there pressing the button over and over again-pretty annoying. Set the timer for at least 5 minutes please-that is much more reasonable. Also the temperature of the water in the shower needs increased as it was only lukewarm. The bathrooms were fairly clean and it was overall a nice stay but I hope someone takes these few recommendations into consideration to help improve the experience. There is also no playground at Grace Coolidge like there are at the other camp sites, and it would be nice if they could install one in this campsite area too.

July 2025 Horse Camp Review
We stayed at French Creek Horse Camp. Beautiful campground and you cant beat the equestrian trails. Clean facilities too.
On l y drawback is the number of side by sides, 4 wheelers and motorcycles constantly buzzing through camp. The camp is supposed to be for people with horses only however, there was a toy hauler camping there with atvs and no horses. This was a major concern.

Best State Park Ever
Having traveled widely and stayed in many state campgrounds, Custer State Park far exceeded expectations. We stayed in the Game Lodge campground with our trailer. Our daughter and family stayed in a "camper cabin." Everything was well maintained. The bathhouse was extremely clean. I was not going to use it till I had several reports that the showers were excellent with adequate hot water. Our meal at the Grace Coolidge Lodge was a special treat. The employees of the State of SD who manage and staff this State Park deserve a huge pat on the back. On a rainy day we explored the Bison experience, just terrific.

Tight fit, nice park
We stayed in Stockade South sites 19 and 20. The sign marking the park is turned so that it appears to point up the road instead of into the park. Once we figured that out we were in the park. We both had 30ft rvs and it was a challenge getting into the spots but we made it and we fit. The spots were very uneven side to side (I was up almost 5 inches and it still wasn't perfectly level) which was something I thought could be changed with some gravel. Also not having a dump station was inconvenient. The bathhouse was clean and in good working order. It was a very nice place to stay while exploring the area!

Ain't no place like the Black Hills!
Our third visit to Custer State Park, and it is still a perfect place to use as a basecamp to all of the Black Hills. Stockade Lake is a short drive to the various attractions, and is right next door to supplies in Custer. I'll be back. The only negative is that the only dump station is a bit of a drive away, over at the start of the wildlife loop. Wee wish there was a dump station more closely located (or full hookups). Thanks.

We always enjoy our stay at Legion Lake campground. This year we were in site 14 which was definitely not our favorite. We had to have our camper in a certain spot to get the slide out on one side, which prevented us from getting out awning out on the other. It won’t prevent us from going back. I already have my two reservations for next year, but we won’t reserve 14, again. It’s just not a good fit for our camper, which is only average size.

Little Slice of Heaven
This was our third time staying at the Blue Bell Campground Camping Cabins, and Custer State Park keeps drawing us back. The park is stunning, the cabins are comfortable, and there are tons of activities for the whole family to enjoy. We spent time at the lake, hiked Cathedral Spires and Black Elk Peak, and did the Wildlife Loop twice.
We were pleasantly surprised to find a new playground installed at the campground—our 6-year-old loved it and used it regularly, along with many of the other kids staying there. The staff are friendly and work hard to keep the grounds clean.
A few upgrades we’d love to see at Blue Bell in the future include: trough-style sinks for dishwashing and updated bathhouses that don’t require a fan running constantly to dry the floors.

Game Lodge Campground July 2025 Review
Great Hosts, Facilities and very clean. Laundy within the campground was reasonably priced, worked. The reason for a 2 in safety / security was that an adult male with 2 girls was in the lady's bathroom. The bathroom stalls and showers have huge gaps (up to 2 inches) in them at the Game Lodge Campground where you can see someone undressed for showers or using the toilet. The man did not see using women's bathroom as an issue. The mother said she told him to use the bathroom because she did not feel comfortable with the girls using the men's bathroom and her husband doesn't look..... Fixing the gaps or having family restrooms would help resolve this concern.

Everything was neat and clean. The grass was green with all the rain they have received. The bathrooms were spotless for the 6 days we stayed. The only negatives are that some spots have the fire pit on the back side of the camper and many spots are uneven requiring a lot of leveling of the camper.

Confusing but Beautiful
The camping pads did not seem to all be the same size but their size was not listed. We were lucky that out 12' tent fit nicely on the pad. The reservation process is very confusing, I get it now but we missed out on a campsite the first night. The camping area is nice and I do appreciate the sites are not able to be reserved in advance.

Trash Strewn
There was garbage, cigarette, and marijuana butts, and burned paper all over the site and in the fire ring, which was basically an ashtray. By the time I finished cleaning the site, I just went to bed. You guys owe me the $200 cleaning fee you threaten to charge people, since I cleaned your property. Also the bob cat construction equipment right next to my tent site, out my tent window was an eye sore.

Custer State Park was a wonderful 3 day stop on our 2 week roadtrip through the western US. The park was beautiful, well maintained, and in a great location with access to other activities. We saw bighorn sheep, bison, pronghorn, and burrows. We camped at Game Lodge which was a very nice camping area.

Custer Experience
Custer is a beautiful park. The Blue Bell Campground was spacious with campsites staggered so we were not looking right at another camper. There are so many activities from hiking, horseback riding, biking, chuck wagon cookouts and ranger programs.
The park could do a little better at having recycling bins available and placed where they get used.
We absolutely will return to this park when we can stay 3 or 4 nights.

Camping at Sylvan Lake
We camped in a tent site and had a short walk up a hill. The camp sites were in the same general area but there was enough trees and space to make out feel secluded. The outhouses were clean. We talked to the staff and they were incredibly friendly and helpful. I would absolutely recommend this campground.

Nice stay at Grace Coolidge Site GC19E
We were on Site 19. It’s across from the shower rooms and the campground hosts’ site. No issues at all. Other than a few young campers that walked in between our tow vehicle and trailer. The site/campground was clean and guests were friendly. The shower room was very clean. There’s no reception regarding cell service (for us/verizon). We’ve stayed at Grace Coolidge before and we would go back again.

Only dump station in wildlife loop
Water fill-up spigots were placed on roads where if you pulled your camper up to fill the tank, you’d block the road. The only dump station was located 20 minutes away in the wildlife loop, which was not clear at the time of reservation. The sites were very unlevel but pretty.

Enjoyable yet again
This was my second stay in game Lodge campground. The first time I tented this time I rented a cabin. The cabin was perfect for what I needed. Bed and a dry place to sleep with air conditioning for my pup. The AC wasn't the most effective but it took the edge off and thankfully we only had one really hot day while I was there. The campground is well maintained and the bathrooms are kept clean. The sites all throughout the park are wonderful. We see wildlife every time we are there. The hikes are amazing and it's always a wonderful time. One thing that I would have liked would be a second basic bathroom towards the entrance to the park which was where my cabin was. There is toilets in the center and two bath houses but a single basic vault toilet near the playground would be really convenient.

An Absolute Gem
Custer State Park was such a pleasant surprise in comparison to other state and national parks we have camped at. The restrooms and showers at our campground were the cleanest we have ever encountered, and I never had to wait in line to use them. Campground staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Our campground had a huge lawn area and play equipment for my kiddos, which they loved. This was hands down one of the best camping experiences we have ever had!

Not what we were looking for.
We were at camp site 15 and it was a 50 yard walk minimum from our car to our campsite uphill. But they provide you with use of a wheelbarrow. We have five kids so our tent was very large and camping gear and clothes were packed in tubs. There was no easy way to get anything to your campsite and the barrooms were at the bottom of the hill and were disgusting. No showers provided. We didn’t even unload anything just chalked our visit up to throwing money away and went back to town and got a hotel room. Would not recommend this campsite at all. Worst one we’ve ever been too.

Our stay
Overall our stay was very nice everything was very clean and the campsite was beautiful. The only issue we had was when my daughter had to use the bathroom and we came to use it and a park ranger/woman said she couldn’t use either bathroom because they were cleaning and it would be 10-15 minutes. Imagine telling a child they can’t use the bathroom or anyone for that matter, they could have let us use the other bathroom that wasn’t being cleaned and guarded the door as there was about three people standing there. I thought that was silly. Other than that the stay was great I’d come back again!

Wonderful stay at a beautiful park!
We are a family of 4 and we stayed in a camping cabin. It was perfect for us, but not sure how a 5th person would have fit. This park is amazing, and every employee and volunteer we interacted with were friendly, informative and helpful. We stayed for 5 days/4 nights and wish we would have stayed longer. There were so many things to do- both ranger led programs and areas to explore on our own. We loved it all!

Loved our time in Custer St. Pk.!
We camped for four nights in the Bluebell campground. The hosts were so kind and friendly. The bathrooms/showers were the cleanest and DRIEST I have ever seen in my 30+ years of camping. We had beautiful weather and NO BUGS. The two tent sites we used were beautiful. I honestly can't think of anything to criticize. Of course, the whole park is wonderful, as well. We saw prong horns and elk and bison and wild burros and prairie dogs and an eagle. The rocks everywhere made for fun climbs for our teens and adult children. Lots of hiking trails for hikers, and scenic drives for older folks like me.

To be honest, there are so many beautiful places nearby to go camping when you live in Denver that we had not considered South Dakota. We went because it was a state in the US we had not been to and it was only a 5-6 hour drive. Custer State Park exceeded our expectations. It's gorgeous and so well maintained. We will be back.

Nice cabins, we got in on last years pricing for the cabins. Before everything double entry pass last year $34 to $60 dollars this year, and cabin prices and out of state reservations increased. Which makes staying elsewhere cheaper.

While the camp ground and host were amazing, we had no idea what BBE4 meant. A simple adjustment on the reservation stating it was Blue Bell would have be an asset to us from out of state. We were fortunate in finding help at an information area as we came in later than planned. She told us what the BB stood for and how to find that area. Maybe a map of the different campgrounds that could be downloaded. Especially when the sites are listed as Custer State Park.

Spectacular park
So much to see and do at this park. On par with (maybe even surpassing) major national parks. Get the schedule for daily programming at the visitors centers - it’s packed with stuff for your whole family every day (kayaking, archery, games, gold panning, presentations…), all for free. Make sure you visit the Bison Center to learn so much about the area as well as bison. Ask the ranger there where to currently see the bison - they’ll know! And don’t miss hitting Mt Rushmore for the lighting ceremony in the evening. You need at least a few days here. We won’t stay for less than a week next time - and we would drive from MI to do it. Worth it.

Great camp for horses. But concerned about non horse campers.
We have stayed several years at this camp with our horses. The rules require everyone camping there that rents a camping spot has to have horses. This last visit there were campers who were in camp spots that had motorcycles. And no horses. There were also children riding scooters all around the campground without giving right of way to riders with horses.
Families with kids with motorcycles and bicycles should camp in alternative campsites that do not require horses. This is a safety issue and it should be enforced. It is a wonderful park at French Creek. We would hate to see the rules not applied to all campers.

Best State Park Experience
Custer State Park has the most variety in landscape and activities we’ve experienced in a state park, having visited many in the Midwest and beyond. We were astonished by the landscape, particularly Needles Hwy, Sylvan Lake and Sunday Gulch, and the wildlife loop. We were impressed by the free programming with opportunities to rock climb and learn archery for kids and adults. Our kids got to try horseback riding and are begging to do the longer trips out of Bluebell Stables next time. The thrill of finding bison and other animals like sheep, goats and eagles will be a forever memory for our kids and family. We will absolutely plan another long trip for this park. We saw so much but feel like we could spend another few weeks and have completely new and exciting experiences. The staff was wonderful, and naturalist Anna particularly made the experiences special for our kids.

French Creek Horse Camp is an absolutely beautiful and well maintained facility. Only negative is there is no water at stables or campsites. For such a nice facility as this it is quite a shame they don’t have proper plumbing.
All is 5 stars! From the camp host, stalls, bath house, maintenance and trails. Would have stayed longer had there been water in barns & at sites.

Gorgeous & Convenient
We stayed at Sylvan Lake campground and needed to reserve our spot one year in advance. It was definitely worth it based on what we could see of other campgrounds once we arrived in the park. Incredibly beautiful spot with lots of trees and very easy access to activities near Sylvan Lake and elsewhere in the park. Definitely a good base camp. These were the largest and cleanest shower facilities I have ever experienced at a state park! The only downside is that there was no dumping station on site. And I struggled with the reservation system; once I made my reservation, it was extremely difficult to locate information that I needed about the campground and the site itself. For example, I could see our dates and the site number, but struggle to find check-in times, a reminder whether or not we had electric on site, the types of facilities, are campfires allowed, etc. Go Outdoors South Dakota app was useless for our trip.

Great park other than no host to be found or contact for after hours.
Several loud campers down and across from us did not respect the quiet time hours. There were kids literally screaming their heads off after 10pm and car doors constantly being slammed shut and open again. Someone was running their generator. No camp host to be found or an after hours contact number to be found. Very disappointing and irritating.

Absolutely wonderful!
We stayed in one of the camping cabins at Blue Bell, and we were so impressed! The cabin had plenty of room for the 5 of us (myself, husband, and 3 children ages 10, 12 & 14) as well as our belongings. It was clean, and the mattresses were fairly comfortable (they are camping cabin mattresses but I was pleasantly surprised). The heat & air conditioning were a huge bonus. The view from our little deck was beautiful! Bathrooms were always clean, and the general store was convenient with excellent customer service. Every park employee we encountered was friendly and helpful. Highly recommend!

Awesome Place, bad noise pollution.
The campground is beautiful and the center lake is so much fun to play in and explore around. The only negative experience we had is that our camping neighbors did not follow camp generator rules and left there generator on all day and night which really made enjoying nature difficult. I just wish the camp host could have done something about it.

June 25 Sylvan Lake Campground
The bathrooms were exceptionally clean this year. (that does not always happen). Check in was easy and the campground hosts were very nice people. The last night of our stay a tree fell on our tent while we were inside. It just missed by pregnant daughter as it tore a big hole in our tent next to her camping cot. The park staff at the campground tried to help but the park employees that take care of this kind of problem said it could wait until the next day. So we spent our last night dodging a big tree between our damaged tent and our vehicle and the bathrooms. Not fun.

Another great stay at the State Game Lodge Campground
We come up 1-2 times a year from Kansas City. We stay a few nights in the State Game Lodge itself and then after a day in Deadwood we stay 2-3 nights in one of the camping cabins at the State Game Lodge Campground. We have never had an issue of any kind...Check in is seamless , the cabins are clean and the area is great. The camping cabin value is tremendous as well. Can't Hardly Wait until we return next year. WE might possibly be back up for the Bison Roundup and the Cabins would be our first choice...Thanks again

No cell service
There is very limited to no cell service at the Sylvan Lake, Campground and Lodge. This is totally unacceptable and unsafe. I have elderly parents and children that may need to reach me. I was very uncomfortable camping there without the ability to contact or be connected to family in case of emergency. I was also unable to get up-to-date information about the weather and there was a severe hail storm while we were there. In this day and age, you MUST provide a adequate degree of cell and data coverage at the campground and lodge area. It is crazy. Please improve the cell service in the Sylvan Lake area. Cost should not be an object to providing safe and adequate cell and data service to your patrons at the state park. The technology exists ti do this today. We have camped at much more remote state parks all throughout this country and have always had good self service at the campgrounds. Many people we met at the campground also had the same complaint. Several said they would return because of this. I will not return until you are able to provide safe and adequate ability for communications at the campground.

Sylvan Lake and Bluebell stay
We stayed a total of 6 nights camping, three at Sylvan Lake and three nights at Blue Bell. The camp hosts at Sylvan Lake were extremely friendly and helpful and the facilities clean. These 2 campgrounds were the perfect mix for our weeklong stay, with Sylvan near great kayaking at Sylvan Lake and hiking at Cathedral Spires as well as the scenic drives on Needles and Iron Mountain roads. Blue Bell was great because of proximity to the wildlife loop and also Wind Cave NP. We did the chuckwagon hayride and dinner from Blue Bell and greatly enjoyed it. A wonderful stay all around.

I love this park
I love this park. Last year I was there for 8 days and this year 3 days. I love the camper cabins, the Needles Highway, the proximity to the town of Custer, the wide variety of campgrounds, the food at the lodges is excellent. The best thing about the park are the hiking trails and seeing bison. I’ve done most of the hikes and there is so much variety in the scenery of each hike. I think it should be a national park - it’s that great!

Bison for Dayyyyyyyys
Took our 7 and 11 y/o kiddos on the wildlife loop several times to find the bison and burros, and were rewarded with up close and personal looks at bison calves and herd bulls as they grazed along the dirt roads and the main paved one. Staff at the wildlife station and our camp host, Deb, were so incredibly friendly and knowledgeable when kids had questions. Grace Coolidge provided bike path access to the visitor center and State Game Lodge, and kid-sized fishing ponds across the street. Booked a site for next year before leaving!!

Loved Custer Park
Hello! We had a wonderful visit at Custer State Park and its Blue Bell campground. Appreciated greatly the availability of potable water and the bath houses were so clean. Loved watching horseback trail riders along the perimeter. My only disappointment was that our site was a bit too short for our trailer and towing truck. We were forced to park a little on the grass but the park ranger said it was ok. Again, the views were amazing, the lightning storm glorious and we’d love to come back one day. Thank you!

Pristine and Peaceful
The Sylvan Lake walk-in campsite was just what we needed. Protected from wind with beautiful trees and only a short walk from the parking lot, which made it fun for the kids (ages 6 and 8), but not too strenuous to set up camp. Picnic table and fire ring with dedicated camping pad made for a peaceful and relaxing stay. Very short distance from beautiful Sylvan Lake. Would definitely camp here again.

Sylvan Lake Campground was beautiful. Our site was in great shape, close enough to the bathrooms for a quick walk but far enough away to avoid traffic. Fun week in the Blackhills
We took our adult children and their spouses to Custer SP, it was the first time we had been in the area. We did the major tourist attractions. We had some cold rainy days and some stunningly gorgeous days. The trip exceeded our expectations. We stayed at Stockade Lake South, 2 cabins and 1 RV spot. The facilities were good, we would like to see them level the RV sites, most looked unlevel. We plan to return, if only to see the progress on Crazy Horse!

Very Nice
We made use of the camper cabin and included a tent next to the cabin at the Game Lodge campground. The park is in nice condition. The campground host stopped by right away to see to it we were the right people. After that, they did not bother us unless we talked to them. There was a minor problem in the men's comfort station. I mentioned it to the host one evening and when I used the facility the next morning it was already taken care of. This campground has a nice location and is quiet at night.

Living the Good Life!
Blue Bell cabins were excellent, with a cozy and efficient layout for our two night stay. Hard plastic mattresses as we were prepared for - bring your own linens/towels/extra pads as needed. The central bathroom facility was great, not smelly or noisy, very clean - appreciated a toilet, sink, and shower all in one private room. Kids loved the big playground and short walk to the river on the horse trail. Would have loved more time to do a trail ride, especially since they offered an option even for the little ones. Shout out to the campground hosts who made a point to meet every single camper upon arrival, amazing hospitality! Custer and the surrounding area has so much to offer, need a week to truly enjoy it all!

We stayed in Custer state park for 2 nights, in Grace Coolidge park and Stockade Lake south. Both were great places to stay! The bathrooms/shower houses were so clean and the park was beautiful. We had a great day driving through the black hills and visiting Mount Rushmore. Difficult Process
This was the most difficult campsite to obtain that I've ever experienced. Had to enter massive amounts of data, not once but twice because the app was required to complete the reservation. Reservations must be 2 days prior limiting availability, so we camped where we didn't want to camp; the only campground where same day registration was allowed..

Incredible place
Staying in the park means being closer to the hikes and the incredible scenic drives. Constant presence by rangers and hosts meant quiet nights and clean campgrounds. With the exception of when the trash truck came at 6:30am to empty the camp dumpster at Stockade North. Sites are level enough and spaced apart well enough. There are 2 dump stations in the park, neither of them are convenient for staying at Sylvan or Stockade lakes. Bathrooms were surprisingly clean and free of odors.

Great trip
We stayed at Custer's Stockade South campground site 04 and had a wonderful time for a Sunday-Friday trip! The weather wasn't the best during our stay (constant mist and rain) which obviously can't be avoided, but the grounds stayed in great shape and facilities were all VERY clean! The campground was easily accessible to town and the rest of the park, and we had some great wildlife nearby too. Sites were near each other but not TOO close. The campground was extremely silent for a majority of the stay until a few families came with kids/dogs but still very peaceful and enjoyable. I have never stayed at a campground, especially a state park, with such nice and clean bathrooms/showers. They were obviously cleaned each day, warm and dry even during the rain, and very comfortable water temp and standing shower stalls.

Bluebell Camping Cabins
We've stayed at Bluebell numerous times over the past 25 years both in the campground and in the cabins. The bathroom situation at the cabins is awful. Three bathrooms with both toilet and shower in one room which makes it impractical for over 20 cabins where numerous people want to either go to the bathroom or take a shower. Instead of investing in more showers or toilets you put in a playground? Also, all of the trees have grown up to the point that there is no view looking at the mountains behind the cabins. The window shades in the cabins are cracked and broken. Disappointed in this visit.

Great Stay at Bluebell Campground
We stayed in Bluebell Campground. Bathrooms were great, waking distance to the Bluebell lodge and little gift ship. Sites are a little close, but the trees help it feel more private and the kids still had some grassy areas to play. We wish the campground saved some of the larger spots for the bigger rigs. It was frustrating to see so many popups/ sprinter vans, etc. in the 40ft driveways while the larger rigs were going on to the grass attempting to fit in the tiny spots.

Best state park
Custer State park is beautiful, well managed. The best park we have been to in comparison to other states. My only gripe is the closeness of Grace Coolidge to the road. Do not stay there if you have kids and / or want a quiet nights sleep.

Didn't disappoint!
This was our 2nd visit - here four years ago. Absolutely love this park! Stayed at Stockade North, where we'd stayed before, then canceled our FCFS plans at Devil's Tower and added two extra days at Legion Lake, just down the road. We prefer State Parks and Stockade is one we would come back to again and again for all the reasons one loves to camp, explore, and learn.

Custer is a must visit state Park!
This was one of the cleanest well maintained state parks we have ever been to. The facilities were top notch. The hosts were friendly and helpful. The trails were beautiful and well marked. The wildlife was amazing. The restrooms were probably the best we have ever encountered (including commercial parks)

Lovely time
We spent one night in the only available spot left in the park. The site was fine. Second and third nights I made reservations at 6 am. We got a spot that someone was a no show. We ventured over to looked at it and it was empty so we moved right away! Great spot. Pretty level. Very very quiet spot! Just what we needed! Too bad they didn’t call reservations and let them know we could have had all 3 nights in one spot! This park is amazing. So much to do and see! I would highly recommend off season visits if you want to see the baby’s!

First time visitor
Through reservation, we got somewhat less nice rv spots as most were taken, but that was due to our lateness. Most sites were medium to large size, clean, well maintained and very green. Very peaceful and quiet. Immaculate restrooms/showers. Only drawback is lack of dump stations, the whole park having 2 locations .

Be sure to make reservations! You can only make reservations on line or by phone! Highly suggest once you visit tour the other campgrounds jot down the spaces that will work best for you!
I would of really liked maps with mileage. Do pick the brains of staff! They are very knowledgeable. And slow down when driving in the park. Especially on the wildlife loop and the other roads! We went very slow people passing us and missing the wildlife! The park is fabulous I could easily of spent a full week!

I camped at Custer State Park for one week, three nights in south stockade Lake Campground and four nights in game Lodge Campground and the facilities are immaculate and well maintained. From our check in at the entrance to our check-in at the campground, everything was fantastic! The check-in associate recommended we eat at Blue Bell lodge, gave several recommendations for food and local beer called buffalo snot! We tried all her recommendations and they were fantastic. Our camp host Theresa was also amazing. Greeting us as we pulled in, gave us great information. Campground was Blue Bell, it was pretty, great location, clean bathhouse, clean dump station. Loved this campground and park. I hope we can return again!

We visited Custer State Park in early May. Everything was just beginning to open up but it was in pristine condition. We didn’t experience the crowds we heard about so would definitely recommend this time of year if possible. Great park but improvements would help
If you’re an out of stater, they’re definitely going to hit you up for more money on camping. That’s fine but on top of the Park fee it gets a little excessive at more than $50 a day. There is only one dump station in the entire Custer State Park according to the website, although there is actually a second one on the loop Road very close. In any event way too few for seven or eight campgrounds and too far to drive. Also, way too many campgrounds were closed in mid May. I urge them to open up the parks given the demand..

We stayed in camping cabin #4. All the cabins had adequate outdoor space and the inside of the cabins were clean and quite spacious! The camp hosts were amazing and offered ideas as soon as we arrived. We were impressed with the family style shower/restrooms. All were clean. The drive from the campground to most of the hikes was around 30 minutes or less. Our favorite hike was Little Devils Tower. We will definitely come back!

Absolutely loved this park!
We loved our visit to Custer State Park! The wildlife loop was a great drive, and we saw buffalo, mountain goats, burros, prairie dogs, pronghorn and lots of deer. But the best part of our stay was when the mountain goats visited us in our campground… we stayed at Grace Coolidge, which is small and we loved it. Even had a baby mountain goat take a nap in our fire pit… luckily we had not been using it :)

If you love peacefulness, beauty and wildlife, this is the most constant place to visit/camp. The rolling hills with ochre, sage and green hills are so beautiful. We stayed at the Legion Lake Campground. It is located across from Legion Lake. The bathrooms are clean and heated. There are 3 free showers in the women’s bathroom. The trail around Legion Lake is easy and beautiful. We enjoyed the roads with the tunnels, scrambling around on boulders, hiking around Sylvan Lake, and hiking the Little Devil’s Tower trail. We also enjoyed touring Jewell Cave. Custer State Park is beautiful!

Too many dogs
Love CSP and have come here for Easter for many years - great views, few people and lots of family time. This year, somehow went from no pets in camping cabins to everyone bring pets - barking, evidence of not cleaning up and had to go to town to get allergy meds. We don’t have little kids using playground, but happy we didn’t, as that seemed to be where pet-owners wouldn’t bring baggies.

Overwhelming bleach smell
We are locals and stay at Custer State Park cabins multiple times a year, so I was very disappointed with our experience this time. We rented 2 cabins when the temps were relatively cold. Neither cabin had the heat turned on and it took over 4 hours before it was warm enough to take off our coats. One of the cabins had an overwhelming, burn-your-eyes bleach smell. So we had to open the windows and blow a fan to get the smell out. Considering it was in the 40s it made our already cold cabin even colder. There was no camp host to request to be moved to a different cabin. This is not the quality standard we expect from Custer State Park. In the past when the temps are cold a worker has turned on the heat BEFORE we arrive and we never had strong bleach smells. If this was our first visit we would not return; however, both issues need to be addressed by Custer.

Beautiful Park
We arrived late afternoon on a beautiful crisp day. We immediately set out to hike around Legion Lake which is right across the street from the campground, and was so pretty. The campground has about 20 spaces, each with a picnic table, fire pit with grill cover and easy access to the very clean bathroom with showers. When we met our camp host Joe, he was very friendly and assured us that no one can ever stay just one night at the campground. He was right! We added another night and took his advice to rent a car to drive the Needles Highway. This was a gorgeous drive and we were so happy to have found this gorgeous location. Very peaceful stay! Highly recommend!

The camping cabin was fantastic and as advertised. However, there were no instructions on how to check in to the cabin. I drove all over the park and got sent to 3 different places before getting to the right spot. There also was no phone number to call included in my reservation confirmation email or at the entrance gates. I could never locate a phone number for any park ranger on any signs or brochures/ maps in the park. I found this very unnerving.

I felt you charge to much for your campgrounds. We have stayed in other state campgrounds in the West and they don’t charge an entry fee if you are staying the night. It’s one or the other not both. $75.00 is to much for a state campground.

Cabin was great
We initially went to the wrong cabin because there is a luxury cabin with the same name BB C18, but after contacting park staff we were directed to correct cabin. We were worried the heater would not be sufficient and we would get cold - we experienced the opposite. The first time we used the heater it overheated the cabin and we only used it on low a few minutes at a time and stayed warm even though it got into the teens over night.
