Just an Ok stay
Campsite was not cleaned (lots of cigarette butts and other debris) plus the ground was very uneven making it a. Hire to level our camper. Fire pit full of debris also. Picnic table not cleaned in quite a while. For what we paid - plus the $25 per week usage fee - we expected some work to have need done on the site. Additionally, many of the programs were far away from our site which meant driving 30 minutes or more. And they were doing road work throughout the park which added more time to the drive.

Annoying Road Construction
I realize that park roads require maintenance and repair. The state surely could have placed some restriction on the work day time allowed for the contractor. Loud belly dump truck/trailers started through the park as early as 5:40 AM and ran until at least 7:30 PM. Even a 7:00 AM start would have been tolerable.

The Best Week
Camped with a couple of families for the week, and had a blast at Grace Coolidge Campground. The closest pond provided some huge stocked trout for the kids to catch, and the pond across the street let everybody practice their longer casts. Bighorn sheep visited the Camp while we were there, and the bison and donkeys provided tins of photo ops along the wildlife loop.
The campground bathrooms were sparkling clean, many thanks to the friendly host.
We got to see fireflies in the evenings, and the loop provided a relatively nice spot for the kids to ride their bikes while the grown-ups talked.
Two things we noticed- the creek on one side of the campground is full of poison ivy, and a couple families were letting their kids wander through it without realizing what it was. Two, people need to clean up after their dogs if they’re camping with them. This was the first time we’ve been there where it was an issue, and it was a large dog who was repeatedly leaving presents right alongside the main path to the bathroom. Ick.

Great except for the road construction
While staying at the Calvin Coolidge Group camp, which is wonderful, there was road construction just outside our site, which meant alot of noise from trucks, which started early in the morning, and delays using any of the roadways just outside our campsite. I understand that this work needs to be done sometime, but a reduced rate would have been nice for the inconvenience.

Holy snapped trees!
We asked the camp host about the thousands of pine trees snapped right in the middle and she said a freak 100 mph 6 hour windstorm came through in December and did tons of damage. They're doing a great job cleaning up but they still have a ways to go! Beautiful park. Beware height clearances if you are headed up to Rushmore.

Custer State Park
Custer State Park exceeded our expectations. Absolutely beautiful park, great facilities, great staff. We already started to plan on a return trip before we even left. We spent 4 nights in a tent site at Blue Bell and it was a great site. Very nice campground. We visited the visitors center on 6/10 around 6 pm and the volunteer that was working was so kind and helpful, and knowledgeable. I didn’t catch her name but we enjoyed speaking with her and she was great with our three year old, showing the different exhibits and teaching about the park and wildlife. Can’t recommend Custer enough.

Loved my stay and wish I had more time.
I stayed at one of the Blue Bell cabins. The cabin and the facilities were clean and comfortable. I hiked two days in the Sylvan Lake area. I loved the Sunday Gulch trail. I felt like I was in Wonderland. I loved the lopsided handrails and oddly skewed bridges. That trail along with driving the not to miss Iron Mountain Road left me feeling that the whole region had a whimsical vibe that I loved. I will definitely come back to explore more areas.

Great campgrounds, horrible website
Loved the free Kayaking morning and the Catch and Cook activities at Center Lake. The campground was clean and comfortable.
The only issue was, Sunday. A new camper was running their generator (2hr limit per regulations) and playing their booming music all evening. The mobile camp host did their mini van rounds three times with out addressing the noise. We tried to stop the mobile camp host but he had his windows up and eyes straight ahead. I’m just happy we were halfway across the campground so we could turn on our fan to ground out the bass.
Also, fix your website before 2027. I could not create an account because we have a PMB.

Pay for site then pay park entry, too $$
Made reservation via 1-800 phone #, asked several times if the campground had flush toilets, they assured us they did. Booked for 2 nts, $69, then had to pay $25 for park entry. No flush toilets, only vault toilets!! Also camp host were constantly buzzing around on gold cart going to sites to make sure people pd, have never seen that before!! Not a very peaceful place! From bottom to top, incredible wilderness and strenuous scrambling to get to top of Little Devils Tower from Trail #4 in Custer Park. I cannot believe this is right in the backyard of our country! THE MOST spectacular scenery and stunning landscapes through Black Hills, South Dakota! This was a last minute decision to stop and stay and I was able to book a reservation to camp at Center Lake which was quiet, clean and safe. I appreciated the specialized attention from the Park Rangers host to say hi and ask if I needed anything. Love the hospitality. Can't wait to come back to explore more.

Our Wonderful Custer Experience
Our first out of state camping trip to Custer park was fabulous in every way. The park is very well maintained, with helpful rangers and staff, and our campground facilities at Grace Coolidge campground were outstanding. The bathrooms were spotless during our week-long stay, the campground was quiet and friendly. We toured every corner of the park, wildlife loop road, the scenic drive to Mt. Rushmore and on to Crazy Horse, Sylvan Lake & Needles Highway along with a trip down to Hot Springs to the Mammoth Site, and up to Spearfish Canyon and the Badlands. The natural beauty and awe of wildlife were highlights of our Black Hills experience. We can't wait to return! Thank you for your hard work and dedication to such important parts of our land and history.

Repeat visitors
This is the fourth time we have stayed in camping cabins at Custer state park. The cabins are clean, the shower houses are never out of toilet paper or soap. They are cleaned daily, trash emptied daily also. Showers are cleaned daily with none to minimal grit on the floors. There are three shower stalls, 3 separate toilet stalls and two sinks in front of a large mirror.
The staff and neighbor campers are friendly and quiet. We have always felt safe leave camp chairs, hammacks, shoes outside our cabin and have never had issues with anything stolen or messed with. Stockade Lake south is our favorite. It's close to a couple of trails, good fishing, and the closest to Custer (the town) if a run for ice is needed. We have stayed at Bluebell once, and we drive there to eat buffalo burgers (it's our favorite lodge to eat at) even if we're not staying at the Bluebell cabins. Bluebell cabins are closer to the horse corral if you plan to spend time there on your visit. The horseback rides are great! I went with kids (not because I really wanted to). It was beautiful! The horses were tame and we crossed creeks on them too. I really enjoyed it!!

3 bathrooms for that many cabins????!!!!
We stayed at Blue bell campground in the cabins. Cabin was clean it had two sets of bunk beds, so not the fancy cabins LOL. Park was great! Only complaint is they had 3 bathrooms for all the cabins in the area. Each one had a shower and toilet in the same building, so if all you wanted to do was brush your teeth you had to wait 30 minutes for someone to get out of the shower!!!! That's a long time wasted waiting to brush teeth!!! They need toilets and sinks separate from showers.. also nice if they double the amount of both!!

Amazing Park
Custer State Park is an amazing destination. We stayed for a week in Bluebell Campground. The sites were spacious enough to not feel crowded and everything was immaculate. Camp hosts were knowledgeable and friendly. I cannoy say enough positive things about our whole experience there. The park itself is breathtaking. We saw so much wildlife and were able to hike a couple trails. It is a great central spot to visit attractions outside the park, too. We visited Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, the Badlands, and even an impromptu visit to Devils Tower. However, you wouldn't even have to leave the park to have fun. We drove the wildlife loop and all the side gravel roads numerous times throughout our visit. The scenery and wildlife sightings kept drawing us back out.

We Love Custer State Park
Custer State Park is a must visit. We have been car camping across the US and decided to splurge on one of their cabins at the Blue Bell Campground. Needless to say, we loved our time here and don’t regret it. We can tell people care about this park - both the visitors and the staff. It’s a beautiful area that seems well taken care of, and we saw tons of bison and other wildlife. We won’t forget our time here!

We knew it could be anywhere between 30 - 80* when we booked for the week before Memorial Day and were so excited and relieved to unpack our things into a cozy little cabin while it was rain/snowing on us after we arrived. Our cabin was a tiny room with a bunk bed and twin bed, a little table, and a bookshelf. We turned out the small heating unit and all four of us slept great. We wouldn't have needed the heater the other nights, but it was way nicer than sleeping in a tent in 30*, which we have done before. But this was nicer. :)
The bathrooms were clean, warm, and with warm/hot water in the showers.
Also, a huge shout out to the great staff with the horses. We have an 8 and 10 year old who haven't ever been around horses before, and the staff were so sweet and kind to the kids and the horses during their first ever horse ride. Core memory unlocked.

We stayed in a cabin in the Stockade Lake South campground and it was an amazing experience for the price! And the bathrooms were cleaned several times a day, cleanest ones of any park we have ever camped at. Will definitely return to this park!

This park is spectacular!
The staff at the campground were so friendly and beyond helpful. We were greeted by a smiling gentleman that checked us into our campsite. This some man( I wish I could remember his name) gave me a booklet an gave some tips of points of interest .The next morning ( my birthday) we woke up to a herd of buffalo in the campground! Wow! The park staff did a fantastic job of keeping everyone safe and rounding up the buffalo and diving them outside of the campground! After breakfast we took off for the Needles highway, what a road! It is just like the description and MORE! Heed all the warnings it is steep and very narrow tunnels made of rock formations, but worth the journey. We were rewarded with breath talking views and an out of this world experience! Then the wildlife loop, the name says it all animals on all sides! I would give this park a 20 out of 10. We will be coming back!

Beautiful place amongst the trees!
Loved the campsite in the trees. There was plenty of space between sites gave the sense of privacy. The showers were excellent and well maintained and very clean. While we thought at first that Stockade North wasn’t the ideal campground, we discovered it was perfect for us because it was so relaxing and the Stockade Lake trail was our best hike of the last four months road trip. It was close enough to Sylvan lake and Wind/Jewell Caves nearby. We also enjoyed the Chuckwagon Hay ride cookout was excellent, a highlight of our trip.

Legion Lake Campground stay in Custer State Park
Campground host, Cindy and volunteer, Pat, are exceptional folks. Pat's recommendations for the best hikes were perfect! We nicknamed him 'Sunday Gulch' as that hike was not on our radar until we talked to him - one of the best hikes in the park, but it is only for the very healthy hiker. We were there for four nights and enjoyed every night. The campground at Legion Lake is quiet and if you want a leisurely walk, across the road is a short hike around Legion Lake itself. Had Bison come through the campground, a bit un-nerving for folks from northern WI, but also very interesting. This campground is centrally located to most things we wanted to do while in the state park system. If we return, you bet we will stay in that campground again!

Good Time as Always
The only thing that kept this particular visit to Custer (Game Lodge Campground) from being a "5" for overall experience was the construction on 16A, but it was a minor inconvenience. The pilot cars and temporary Stop Lights were efficiently done. We actually saw more Bison than normal, and in areas we'd never seen them before! Great birdwatching, too!! There was a small fire outside of the campground area - and once we found out it was contained it was interesting watching the helicopter pilot scooping up water from the pond and flying it over to dump!

Signage
Need signage added at Stockade lake north campground loops to show which sites are in which loop and a one way sign needed on the loop for sites 30 and up. Or have a map of the two loops at the entrance with direction of travel and site number ranges. We went the wrong way in the loop and had to disconnect our tow vehicle to turn around. It wasn't just us either. During our stay we saw a number of campers stopped at that intersection for a long time trying to determine where to go and often going the wrong way. We liked Stockade Lake better than our second campsite at legion lake but appreciate having choices to extend our stay.

Super clean, easy to drive through and get in and out of campsite, wonderful bathroom/ shower house. We were there when temps were still in the 20s at night so dump station wasn't open in the campground but double dump station and fresh water was open just up the road (in the park). Great state park
We stayed in the Great Lodge Campground near the Visitor’s Center. It was very clean and well maintained. The host was very nice, helpful and friendly. The Creekside trail is accessible from the campground, which is handy. Lots of wildlife active in the park.
There is a fee to enter the park, plus another reservation fee, in addition to the campground site fee. It makes one night close to $75. It is a great park, so “you get what you pay for” seems to apply.

Private Bison Jams
What a wonderful time of year in Custer State Park! We shared the Game Lodge Campground with two dozen bighorn sheep, herds of deer, and few stray bison. Animals definitely outnumbered the humans. Not only did we have our own private bison jams, the trails were quiet, and we also saw too many elk, pronghorn, and prairie dogs to count...and don't forget the burros, they are always happy to see you. The key is to get off the beaten path. Take that gravel road. Head out to the Wildlife Loop at dawn and/or dusk, but drive slowly. Take the time to just sit, observe, and listen. You'll be surprised what happens when you just wait quietly.
The Game Lodge Campground was fantastic. We were surprised to have running water, hot showers, and clean restrooms.

Hike
I absolutely love this park! I wish it was closer to home for me. I have yet to hike a trail that didn’t offer something spectacular. This was the first year we stayed in a camper cabin. Offered everything we needed since we spend most our time on the trails. The park is extremely dog friendly as well. The first time I visited with my pup I e-mailed just to ask if there were any places she wasn’t allowed. It almost seemed in their response that they were excited my pup got to share the experience with me. We have been there a few times now and will continue to go back, hopefully yearly.

Hidden gem
Cute lil cabin tucked away with ample privacy. Plenty of space for my pup to explore and for me to set up anything extra. Host was friendly, welcoming my arrival while sharing some bits about the area. Shower house super clean and well maintained. Would highly recommend staying here. Cabin is a bit small for larger family if it were to be a day needing to stay in. Definitely more of a place to lay your head and change an outfit. Has four beds set up as two bunk beds with one bed being I believe a full or queen size, others are twins. Mattress not bad, bring own linens. No mini fridge so bring an cooler. Over all just a great gem tucked in Custer park that I have stayed at several times.

Custer State Park Campgrounds
I came for the Buffalo Roundup, it had been 15 years since I last visited Custer State Park, at that time I realized I should have spent more time in the park when visiting the Black Hills. I stayed for a week this time and it was well worth every minute. This is such an outstanding part in every way. That includes the campground, Bison Center, wildlife viewing, gorgeous landscapes, employees and volunteers. The park is well run and maintained, much better that many National Parks. My son & I have been to 38 national parks and Custer rates up there with Glacier, Grand Canyon, Grand Tetons & Big Bend. Thank you South Dakota for this park and doing such a good job to running the jewel that it is.

The cabin at Stockade Lake South was great. However, make sure you understand there's only beds, table and electricity. Walk to bath/toilet house is a concern. Great campground & staff
Beautiful and small-ish campground close to park trails and activities. Hot showers even! My only beef is a staff member came and pounded on my camper at 11:55 announcing checkout. I understand keeping the schedule in a busy park/campground but this was disruptive as I was on a work call. I was also completely packed up with a clean site and ready to roll when I was planning to wrap up the call at 11:59. That said, it was minor and didn't inconvenience my trip or stay.
The regular evening host/check in person was very friendly and helpful and the whole system is very organized.

Custer Family Camping at Blue Bell
We had a great stay at the Blue Bell Campground with our kids (ages 4, 7 and 10). The campground store has everything you would need along with great Custer souvenirs that we grabbed on our way out. There's a nice playground near the bath house in the cabin loop, which also has a family bathroom. The facilities and campsites are all well kept. My only comment is that, at least in sites 10 and 11, the fire rings are on the opposite side of the campsite then what would make sense . . . we were in a motorhome, so we just pulled nose in so that our ring was still on our patio side. The camp host was very attentive and quickly to our campsite upon arrival to answer questions and give the lay of the land.

Very nice campground Stockade Lake South. Easy in and out of the sites. Mostly off camber sites so you will need to level your camper good. We saw a few campers having some challenges leveling theirs. Park was fairly full, could have showed up without a reservation and found a spot this time of year.

One of the best state parks
Fall color cannot be timed, but we hit it just right. Aspens and green ash trees were in full yellow color, and we did both our drives in the morning when the light was good, and traffic was less. We RV in a 25-footer with no tow, so we rented a Jeep in Custer to drive Needles Highway and Iron Mountain Road and visit Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse over 6–7 hours. Another morning we drove the Wildlife Loop: Wow. We rank the Loop experience higher than Needles, and Needles was very good. Enjoyed our white-table-cloth dinner at the State Game Lodge (buffalo ribs, elk ravioli . . . everything was outstanding. We really liked the Game Lodge Campground. Sites had a good amount of separation and were Starlink-friendly.

Buffalo Round-Up & Grace Coolidge Campground
Grace Coolidge CG is a nice & clean campground. The camp host, Deb, was very friendly and knowledgeable about the area.
Buffalo Round-Up.. I would suggest that the concessions at each location stay open to sell water & soda u til the buffalo have been put in the corrals. They stopped selling at 9:00 am & the buffalo didn’t even make it to the location until about 10:40. It was over 70 degrees and warm with no shade. Most people came unprepared without anything to drink.

I camped in a tent camp site one night and a camping cabin the next night. Overall everything was super clean. Bathrooms and showers were in great shape. Normally I expect to see spiders and whatnot in the vault toilets but there were none. Center lake was the tent site, beautiful view of the lake by the shower house. Blue bell for the camping cabin.. the cabin was amazing! It had heat, AC, electricity, table, 2 sets of bunk beds. Plenty of room for a group of 5 even though it was just me. My favorite part about the park is that it felt like a giant drive thru safari. I recommend taking the wildlife loop to see the donkeys! I spent 2 days in the park and feel like I needed 2 more just to really see everything.

Campground needs some work! Showers didn’t have warm water and the huge fan running makes it feel freezing! Most of the sites are VERY unlevel. The campground is secluded but the road back to the campground is awful. Highly suggest using Lower French Creek Road to enter and exit because Stockade Lake Drive is awful, especially in the dark!

Close to main road with easy access to Wildlife Loop, the Game Lodge if you want to have a meal, and the Visitors Center. Best camping spot!
We stayed in South Stockade Lake and I feel like it's location is the best! It's right next to Custer, convenient for ice and restaurants. The land is massive, so much to explore there. We probably only hiked within a .5 mile radius and there was so much to see. The only thing that would make it better, is to add a mini fridge.

Another Great Stay
We have been visiting Custer State Park and camping at the State Game Lodge for over 15 years now and will go nowhere else. We used to tent camp and now stay in a camping cabin; #8 is our favorite but #6 is now a close second. The camping sites are always clean, as are the bathrooms and laundry facilities. Staff is friendly and helpful when needed. I do need to say that our camp attendant this time was the best we've ever encountered. He facilitated our move from #7 to #8 and made the transition seamless. He also made more daily loops of the campground than we have ever seen before.
We're not sure how many more years we will be camping but, as long as we are, we will be returning to Custer State Park.
PS Do the wildlife loop early in the morning. Less traffic and more wildlife.

Beautiful park, we stayed at the stockade north campground. Need to do better with the vault toilets. Also, they ask you to put a sticker on the inside of the front windshield, it stuck to the window and had to use Goo Gone to get it off. Also, the reservation email just had initials to tell us which campground we were staying at. We went in the opposite side of the park from where we were staying. This was our second camping trip to Custer in 13 months. We live in Illinois and love how Custer feels like a world away, but is easily accessible to us. This time, we had a creekside site at the Game Lodge Campground [last time we stayed in the same campground but in a non creek site]. We love this campground because we can easily access the main visitor center, State Game Lodge, and the Coolidge General Store. Facilities in the campground are well maintained. My kids are currently 12, 11, and 9 and they're already talking about returning again next year.

The park is wonderful, so much to see and lots of hiking trails! If you want to alter your reservation when you are in the park...impossible.There is no cell service and no Wifi available. There are NO staff in the park that can do this, it's all online or a phone call.So if you don't have either you can' t do anything. We found a person that directed us to the highest spot in our campground and got a cell signal, then waited for 15 minutes in the hot sun before someone answered the phone. My suggestion drive into the town of Custer and do all of you calls, reservations from there.Have a great time, it's a top notch park!

I tent camped four nights at the Grace Coolidge tent area at site 22. Thought it was located down a very short hill, it ended up being the most secluded, with a nice grassy area looking at a rock cliff with a small stream flowing beneath it.

French Creek is great. Expect longer trails that are poorly marked. Also, the app for the map does not download there, nor is it an easy app to navigate which is the case for the gooutdoorssouthdakota website. One of the worst that I have experienced. I have used multiple map apps while riding SUV & snowmobiles without a problem. This one is very difficult to figure out. also, had a funeral so we went riding a week sooner than originally planned, canceled our reservation for the following week. Said we were qualified for full refund and that we should expect $ in 2-3 days. Everything looked good and I exited the site. Got an email reminding me that we had upcoming reservations( that we had cancelled) while gone and we were not able to follow up. Now, when I got home I see that we didn't get reinbursed and the cancellation never happened. Again, this is a poor website. We liked it so much better when we could go right to the Park we wanted to stay at and not navigate through all of them.
And again, while French Creek is great, take some notes from the snowmobile trails in the Blackhills and have maps and good directions at intersections on trails.

Amazing Park
We had a wonderful stay at Custer. We stayed at both the Stockade Lake North and Legion Lake Campgrounds. The facilities at both were the best we have com across. We really enjoyed taking with our camp host, Pat, at Stockade North.

Another great trip!
This was probably our 12th visit to the park....always stay at Game Lodge campground. Tent sites in the past, and now that we're older, cabins. It's quiet, spacious, great facilities and close to the Wild Life Loop. We did have a rip-snorter of a thunderstorm our last night there this year! Thunder shook the cabin! We were definitely glad we weren't in a tent!!

Great
We stayed at State Game Lodge RVpark. We absolutely loved it. Very spacious sites, in a beautiful setting and close to everything. It was also the quietest campground we’ve ever visited and was perfectly secure. We have a 42 ft 5th and found the park very easy to navigate. The campground is also in a great location to visit the attractions, and the shower facilities were very clean. A+.

Center Lake 9 ft clearance restriction -ugh!
During same day reservation process for Center lake camping I was asked the length and width of RV but not height. There is a 9.8 clearance restriction. Out RV is 11 feet. Driving in as it begins to get dark and paying park fee, only to discover that we couldn’t access the camp site was super disappointing and stressful.

OK for two nights
Campsite was okay, although traffic noise on Hwy 16A was quite loud. Bathroom light was way too bright (should be shielded!) and lit up entire campground. Showers are across the Hwy, not a bad trek. Shower door wouldn't latch, Ranger said they are fixed frequently, but best to shove chair against it instead. Nice little hike around nearby lake. Friendly Ranger and fellow campers.

The cabin was a wonderful place to stay with a/c and a heater and the grounds were great for relaxing and cooking out. We do wish they would have checked the lights in the cabin as the ceiling lights were burned out. The restrooms are the best I’ve ever had in a campground. Thank you for a wonderful weekend!

Best campground bathrooms ever!
We stayed at Lake Stockade South campground, and I was so impressed with this campground! It was beautiful, quiet, and the bathrooms were the best campground bathrooms I've ever been in! And I've been camping for 35 years. Sometimes I just skip showering when we camp because the bathrooms are gross, but these were so nice and it was so great to be clean while camping ??

We ?? Custer Park
We love Custer State Park. We just stayed for a week and would love to have made it two. The facilities are always clean. The staff is friendly. There is a ton of things to do. We visited every historic site, fished, swam, went to the education and visitor centers, hiked, explored Needles Hwy, the pig tails, and took several trips around the wildlife loop. We saw nearly every type of wildlife known in the park and even saw a bonus bobcat. Great experience! We had an RV site and 2 cabins. Everything was wonderful.

I would love to personally thank the campground Host Pat. When we arrived we didn't realized we booked a tent site without electricity. So he worked diligently to fine us a spot to move to. So please let him know how kind generous he was for doing that. The park is beautiful, campsites spacious, bathrooms clean. It was a great experience. We stayed in Sylvan Lake Campground. Before we arrived, we were not aware that there were no dump or water fill options at the campground. Custer had never been on my radar as a must see but while researching our road trip i was surprised at all the beautiful sights. Best Tent Camping Ever!
This is without a doubt one of the best tent camping campgrounds I have ever camped in. The 6 sites are right on Grace Coolidge Creek. There is not a lot of privacy between sites, but when you are in this environment, it doesn't matter! The tent pads are in great condition. The bathrooms are clean and running water is a plus! Going to sleep to the sound of the creek was amazing!

Great site
Game lodge campground has always been our family's goto. We stayed in site #18, which is a great location, just one item for safety, the edge of the paved pad is getting a real high drop off to the ground from the campers door side which we understand is from use traffic. Maybe a little maintenance to fill this in some so it's not an ankle twister.

Beautiful campsites & covered horse pens
The campsites with electric & the covered horse pens are wonderful. The camp hosts, Bob & Crystal, were great. My only complaint & reason why we won’t be coming back is because of the bull bisons on the horse trails. We had one come at us & snorting on a trail, my horse freaked out & started bucking. I stayed on, but I would have been hurt pretty bad if I had landed on those rocks. We then had to bush wack our way out of his area. We encountered Bulls on the horse trails 3 different times. It’s just too dangerous with all the rocks & trying to avoid bulls.

This was the nicest state park I’ve ever visited. We loved the Needles and Mountain View Highways. It’s a beautiful area. The South Stockade campground was a good size and the facilities were clean and the temperature inside was great morning and afternoon. Our stay at Gamelodge exceeded our expectations. We booked it hoping for just a simple place to sleep between our hikes and activities. The cabin was clean and had better amenities than expected. The porch was nice and had an outdoor outlet which was handy. The picnic was nice and large and the firepit was nice with a grate. It perfectly met our needs. Great value, would stay again!
We stayed in one of the basic cabins. At $60 a night, I felt it was an incredible value. This was a 2 night stop on a week long road trip. It was so nice to be able to skip setting up a tent for a reasonable price. The cabin was clean and that is all we were hoping for! The bathrooms were also the cleanest we encountered out of all the campgrounds we stayed at. Our cabin had the bonus of a being the furthest in the back so we had a lot of privacy which was really nice. The store was close we could restock ice or do laundry when needed. The washing machines could use some cleaning. That would be my only complaint. I would definitely stay here again!

The showers and bathrooms are well-lit and very well-maintained and kept clean at ANYTIME of the day and night as well. French Creek and SDGFP is the BEST
Horse camping at French Creek - trails well marked, horses must have shoes! Rocky in places on some trails. The many trails offer a variety of flora and fauna to enjoy. The campground is immaculate, well cared for and the facilities keep getting better. The corrals are now covered and soon there will be water taps right by the corrals. The campground host is gracious and helpful. The Park Staff are friendly and do a great job! This is just the most peaceful place to enjoy riding.

Sylvan Lake Campground is great
We really enjoyed Sylvan Lake Campground, it's just minutes from the lake as well as hiking trails and Needles Eye Tunnel. There is a hiking trail from the campground to the lake that we didn't have a chance to use, but guessing it's around .25 miles. Was pleased with the modern bathrooms with showers. The campground host made a few recommendations for our time in the area that proved to be great advice as well!

Stockade Lake short stay
We very much enjoyed our quick stay at Custer St Park. We stayed here on our way out to Montana for two nights to explore the area and truly enjoyed the experience. Making out of state reservations was simple and easy and I was able to do so with a short amount of time, even during Sturgis bike week!
The only minor thing that would have made our registration easier would have been to list the name of the campground on our confirmation email. With the lack of cell service in the park, I downloaded the reminder email but it only listed the site number, not the name of the campground. Would have helped us navigate a bit better knowing which campground we were going to. Thankfully, your amazing volunteers helped us figure it out based on the letters in front of the site number! Overall, an amazing stay, we will definitely be back some day.

Camping ruined by motorcycles.
We were excited for the first family vacation we were able to have in 7 years, but it was ruined by motorcycles everywhere we went. The loud engines from early in the morning until late at night scared all the wildlife away and ruined the forest experience. The animal loop was pretty much empty. I get that the Sturgis rally is a huge boost for the local economy, but maybe there could be rules, or at least strong suggestions about when and where motorcycles are allowed. Especially the really loud ones.

Pleasant stay-few recommendations
The visit is nice-the noise from the traffic can be a bit much but we also did go at the very beginning of the rally so there was an uptick in traffic. Facilities were overall pretty nice and the area was beautiful and well maintained. My only suggestion is to please increase the shower time. You have to repeatedly press a button outside of the shower ever minute and a half in order to get water to shower-what person do you know that takes only a minute and a half long shower? So you’re stuck there pressing the button over and over again-pretty annoying. Set the timer for at least 5 minutes please-that is much more reasonable. Also the temperature of the water in the shower needs increased as it was only lukewarm. The bathrooms were fairly clean and it was overall a nice stay but I hope someone takes these few recommendations into consideration to help improve the experience. There is also no playground at Grace Coolidge like there are at the other camp sites, and it would be nice if they could install one in this campsite area too.

July 2025 Horse Camp Review
We stayed at French Creek Horse Camp. Beautiful campground and you cant beat the equestrian trails. Clean facilities too.
On l y drawback is the number of side by sides, 4 wheelers and motorcycles constantly buzzing through camp. The camp is supposed to be for people with horses only however, there was a toy hauler camping there with atvs and no horses. This was a major concern.

Best State Park Ever
Having traveled widely and stayed in many state campgrounds, Custer State Park far exceeded expectations. We stayed in the Game Lodge campground with our trailer. Our daughter and family stayed in a "camper cabin." Everything was well maintained. The bathhouse was extremely clean. I was not going to use it till I had several reports that the showers were excellent with adequate hot water. Our meal at the Grace Coolidge Lodge was a special treat. The employees of the State of SD who manage and staff this State Park deserve a huge pat on the back. On a rainy day we explored the Bison experience, just terrific.

Tight fit, nice park
We stayed in Stockade South sites 19 and 20. The sign marking the park is turned so that it appears to point up the road instead of into the park. Once we figured that out we were in the park. We both had 30ft rvs and it was a challenge getting into the spots but we made it and we fit. The spots were very uneven side to side (I was up almost 5 inches and it still wasn't perfectly level) which was something I thought could be changed with some gravel. Also not having a dump station was inconvenient. The bathhouse was clean and in good working order. It was a very nice place to stay while exploring the area!

Ain't no place like the Black Hills!
Our third visit to Custer State Park, and it is still a perfect place to use as a basecamp to all of the Black Hills. Stockade Lake is a short drive to the various attractions, and is right next door to supplies in Custer. I'll be back. The only negative is that the only dump station is a bit of a drive away, over at the start of the wildlife loop. Wee wish there was a dump station more closely located (or full hookups). Thanks.

We always enjoy our stay at Legion Lake campground. This year we were in site 14 which was definitely not our favorite. We had to have our camper in a certain spot to get the slide out on one side, which prevented us from getting out awning out on the other. It won’t prevent us from going back. I already have my two reservations for next year, but we won’t reserve 14, again. It’s just not a good fit for our camper, which is only average size.

I stayed at the Stockade Lake North Campground in a tent and loved it!! The site was clean as well at the bathrooms/ showers. All the campers we interacted with (mostly RV) were friendly! We had some deer visit our site in the early morning and could hear coyotes during the night. The staff person who checked us in was so nice and helpful. So much to do around the area!!

Little Slice of Heaven
This was our third time staying at the Blue Bell Campground Camping Cabins, and Custer State Park keeps drawing us back. The park is stunning, the cabins are comfortable, and there are tons of activities for the whole family to enjoy. We spent time at the lake, hiked Cathedral Spires and Black Elk Peak, and did the Wildlife Loop twice.
We were pleasantly surprised to find a new playground installed at the campground—our 6-year-old loved it and used it regularly, along with many of the other kids staying there. The staff are friendly and work hard to keep the grounds clean.
A few upgrades we’d love to see at Blue Bell in the future include: trough-style sinks for dishwashing and updated bathhouses that don’t require a fan running constantly to dry the floors.

Game Lodge Campground July 2025 Review
Great Hosts, Facilities and very clean. Laundy within the campground was reasonably priced, worked. The reason for a 2 in safety / security was that an adult male with 2 girls was in the lady's bathroom. The bathroom stalls and showers have huge gaps (up to 2 inches) in them at the Game Lodge Campground where you can see someone undressed for showers or using the toilet. The man did not see using women's bathroom as an issue. The mother said she told him to use the bathroom because she did not feel comfortable with the girls using the men's bathroom and her husband doesn't look..... Fixing the gaps or having family restrooms would help resolve this concern.

The camping pads did not seem to all be the same size but their size was not listed. We were lucky that out 12' tent fit nicely on the pad. There was garbage, cigarette, and marijuana butts, and burned paper all over the site and in the fire ring, which was basically an ashtray. By the time I finished cleaning the site, I just went to bed. You guys owe me the $200 cleaning fee you threaten to charge people, since I cleaned your property. Also the bob cat construction equipment right next to my tent site, out my tent window was an eye sore.

Custer is a beautiful park. The Blue Bell Campground was spacious with campsites staggered so we were not looking right at another camper. There are so many activities from hiking, horseback riding, biking, chuck wagon cookouts and ranger programs.
The park could do a little better at having recycling bins available and placed where they get used.
We absolutely will return to this park when we can stay 3 or 4 nights.

We were on Site 19. It’s across from the shower rooms and the campground hosts’ site. No issues at all. Other than a few young campers that walked in between our tow vehicle and trailer. Water fill-up spigots were placed on roads where if you pulled your camper up to fill the tank, you’d block the road. The only dump station was located 20 minutes away in the wildlife loop, which was not clear at the time of reservation. The sites were very unlevel but pretty.

Enjoyable yet again
This was my second stay in game Lodge campground. The first time I tented this time I rented a cabin. The cabin was perfect for what I needed. Bed and a dry place to sleep with air conditioning for my pup. The AC wasn't the most effective but it took the edge off and thankfully we only had one really hot day while I was there. The campground is well maintained and the bathrooms are kept clean. The sites all throughout the park are wonderful. We see wildlife every time we are there. The hikes are amazing and it's always a wonderful time. One thing that I would have liked would be a second basic bathroom towards the entrance to the park which was where my cabin was. There is toilets in the center and two bath houses but a single basic vault toilet near the playground would be really convenient.

Custer State Park was such a pleasant surprise in comparison to other state and national parks we have camped at. The restrooms and showers at our campground were the cleanest we have ever encountered, and I never had to wait in line to use them. Campground staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Our campground had a huge lawn area and play equipment for my kiddos, which they loved. This was hands down one of the best camping experiences we have ever had!

Not what we were looking for.
We were at camp site 15 and it was a 50 yard walk minimum from our car to our campsite uphill. But they provide you with use of a wheelbarrow. We have five kids so our tent was very large and camping gear and clothes were packed in tubs. There was no easy way to get anything to your campsite and the barrooms were at the bottom of the hill and were disgusting. No showers provided. We didn’t even unload anything just chalked our visit up to throwing money away and went back to town and got a hotel room. Would not recommend this campsite at all. Worst one we’ve ever been too.

Our stay
Overall our stay was very nice everything was very clean and the campsite was beautiful. The only issue we had was when my daughter had to use the bathroom and we came to use it and a park ranger/woman said she couldn’t use either bathroom because they were cleaning and it would be 10-15 minutes. Imagine telling a child they can’t use the bathroom or anyone for that matter, they could have let us use the other bathroom that wasn’t being cleaned and guarded the door as there was about three people standing there. I thought that was silly. Other than that the stay was great I’d come back again!

We are a family of 4 and we stayed in a camping cabin. It was perfect for us, but not sure how a 5th person would have fit. This park is amazing, and every employee and volunteer we interacted with were friendly, informative and helpful. We stayed for 5 days/4 nights and wish we would have stayed longer. There were so many things to do- both ranger led programs and areas to explore on our own. We loved it all!

Loved our time in Custer St. Pk.!
We camped for four nights in the Bluebell campground. The hosts were so kind and friendly. The bathrooms/showers were the cleanest and DRIEST I have ever seen in my 30+ years of camping. We had beautiful weather and NO BUGS. The two tent sites we used were beautiful. I honestly can't think of anything to criticize. Of course, the whole park is wonderful, as well. We saw prong horns and elk and bison and wild burros and prairie dogs and an eagle. The rocks everywhere made for fun climbs for our teens and adult children. Lots of hiking trails for hikers, and scenic drives for older folks like me.

Will Be Back
To be honest, there are so many beautiful places nearby to go camping when you live in Denver that we had not considered South Dakota. We went because it was a state in the US we had not been to and it was only a 5-6 hour drive. Custer State Park exceeded our expectations. It's gorgeous and so well maintained. We will be back.

It’s the Center of everything.
Campsite was clean. The shower dressing areas were always full of sand. It would be nice to have a porous mat for people to step on while they dress after a shower. Your website for reservations stinks. It’s not user friendly. Don’t know where to go to find a place.

Lastvisit for awhile, until prices are more affordable
Nice cabins, we got in on last years pricing for the cabins. Before everything double entry pass last year $34 to $60 dollars this year, and cabin prices and out of state reservations increased. Which makes staying elsewhere cheaper.
Enjoy custer state park go at least 1-2 times a year, but will be taking a break from visiting the park until prices come down.

Summer 2025
While the camp ground and host were amazing, we had no idea what BBE4 meant. A simple adjustment on the reservation stating it was Blue Bell would have be an asset to us from out of state. We were fortunate in finding help at an information area as we came in later than planned. She told us what the BB stood for and how to find that area. Maybe a map of the different campgrounds that could be downloaded. Especially when the sites are listed as Custer State Park.

Spectacular park
So much to see and do at this park. On par with (maybe even surpassing) major national parks. Get the schedule for daily programming at the visitors centers - it’s packed with stuff for your whole family every day (kayaking, archery, games, gold panning, presentations…), all for free. Make sure you visit the Bison Center to learn so much about the area as well as bison. Ask the ranger there where to currently see the bison - they’ll know! And don’t miss hitting Mt Rushmore for the lighting ceremony in the evening. You need at least a few days here. We won’t stay for less than a week next time - and we would drive from MI to do it. Worth it.

Great camp for horses. But concerned about non horse campers.
We have stayed several years at this camp with our horses. The rules require everyone camping there that rents a camping spot has to have horses. This last visit there were campers who were in camp spots that had motorcycles. And no horses. There were also children riding scooters all around the campground without giving right of way to riders with horses.
Families with kids with motorcycles and bicycles should camp in alternative campsites that do not require horses. This is a safety issue and it should be enforced. It is a wonderful park at French Creek. We would hate to see the rules not applied to all campers.

Great Stay in South Dakota
5 night stay in Game Lodge Campground in a 5th wheel. Nothing short of excellent. Very well kept site, easy to park and set up. Campground host available for questions at check in. Friendly park staff checked on us morning of day 2 to ensure everything was ok, answer any questions and offer suggestions for things to do in the park and beyond. Definitely recommend.

Best State Park Experience
Custer State Park has the most variety in landscape and activities we’ve experienced in a state park, having visited many in the Midwest and beyond. We were astonished by the landscape, particularly Needles Hwy, Sylvan Lake and Sunday Gulch, and the wildlife loop. We were impressed by the free programming with opportunities to rock climb and learn archery for kids and adults. Our kids got to try horseback riding and are begging to do the longer trips out of Bluebell Stables next time. The thrill of finding bison and other animals like sheep, goats and eagles will be a forever memory for our kids and family. We will absolutely plan another long trip for this park. We saw so much but feel like we could spend another few weeks and have completely new and exciting experiences. The staff was wonderful, and naturalist Anna particularly made the experiences special for our kids.

French Creek Horse Camp
French Creek Horse Camp is an absolutely beautiful and well maintained facility. Only negative is there is no water at stables or campsites. For such a nice facility as this it is quite a shame they don’t have proper plumbing.
All is 5 stars! From the camp host, stalls, bath house, maintenance and trails. Would have stayed longer had there been water in barns & at sites.

Gorgeous & Convenient
We stayed at Sylvan Lake campground and needed to reserve our spot one year in advance. It was definitely worth it based on what we could see of other campgrounds once we arrived in the park. Incredibly beautiful spot with lots of trees and very easy access to activities near Sylvan Lake and elsewhere in the park. Definitely a good base camp. These were the largest and cleanest shower facilities I have ever experienced at a state park! The only downside is that there was no dumping station on site. And I struggled with the reservation system; once I made my reservation, it was extremely difficult to locate information that I needed about the campground and the site itself. For example, I could see our dates and the site number, but struggle to find check-in times, a reminder whether or not we had electric on site, the types of facilities, are campfires allowed, etc. Go Outdoors South Dakota app was useless for our trip.

Great park other than no host to be found or contact for after hours.
Several loud campers down and across from us did not respect the quiet time hours. There were kids literally screaming their heads off after 10pm and car doors constantly being slammed shut and open again. Someone was running their generator. No camp host to be found or an after hours contact number to be found. Very disappointing and irritating.
